Lately i have been getting crap from h1 owners for having the "sissy" of the line.. anyone else get anything similar from those who are simply jealous?

Don't even get me started!!!

At EVERY event and offroad trailride I organize for my club....we have about 3-4 H1's in the shop that can't make the run AND we have an H1 breakdown and mess-up the day!!! The H2's just keep on going and always complete the trail.

The H1 is a bit more capable: it's got a few more degrees of side-slope, can go through deeper water and has more clearance...but that's not where it's real capabilities are.

The REAL capabilities of the H1 is to break it's half-shafts, shear it's universal joints and have front-end issues. This bad-boy can deplete a bank account and make a mechanic rich faster then Rosie O'Donell can clear a buffet!

But wait...it gets better: you can't hear yourself think inside these things, they'll rattle your teeth loose and you'll need a chiropractor to work on you if you ever get stuck sitting shotgun.

Parts are expensive, the traction control systems are lousy, the maintenance is a nightmare and they're too wide.

And the worst part is....I still want one!!!

Hummer sold 400 H1 in 2002, sold 700 in 2001. 43% drop. Let's hope they will keep H1 around for many more years to come. Strictly dollar and cents, there is really no reason to keep it on life support.

There are only 2 siblings in the Hummer family, not including the brothers and sisters in arm. What is there to gain by fighting within the family? Both are kings of the hill, I think one even degrades the ultimate status of the Hummer by comparing them with any other automobiles.

When you are successful in rank or office or finance, there are always some less fortunated ones who linger in the backroom no matter how hard they tried, it is only natural that very few of them would be bitter and engage in rumor and false accusations. A confident individual does not concern himself/herself with such irrelevant nonsense, nor does he/she gloat the less fortunated and less educated ones with the hard won success.

I have to agree with Steve 100%! A few more capabilities but a 50k difference in price tag

I got it in PA coming back through after buying the HMMWV. The place was so-and-so's Surplus and he had a bunch of them (about 4 years ago now). They seemed really cheap and it fit on top of the HMMWV being pulled so it was an easy get. I put a couple more pics of it on the H1 Gallery that I made, today.

This argument has merit until you take your Tahoe/Suburban/Escalade offroad. Then compare it to those and the H1 and see which you think it's closer to. I, for one, wouldn't be caught dead in Moab in an Escalade, would you?

Ive had my truck for almost 3 months and have put about 4k miles on it, i have not had one problem with the truck and i have taken it offroad several times. I plan on upgrading to an alpha next summer if the price falls under 100k. Take into account that '03 models and higher have scheduled maintance so almost everything is free!

Thats why my dealer can't keep H2's in stock and why he has to give a 20k to 25k discount off msrp just to get rid of an H1. C

The maintainace isnt that bad on the newer models, at least in my case, i haven't had one problem with it. Everything is scheduled and free on the '03+ models which is nice. Oh and just ignore the my rig is better than yours, its just childish!

The H1 factory recommended maintenance doesn't change from year to year - The '92 maintenance schedule is virtually the same as the '04 maintenance schedule.

The H1 gets an "A" service every 3k, and "A & B" service every 6k, and an "A,B & C" service every 12k miles. These maintenance intervals are cut in half for "Severe Operation", so 1500/3000/6000 miles instead of 3000/6000/12000 miles.

The newer trucks aren't any more "reliable" per se than an older truck, although the N/A trucks seem to be more easily understood than the electronic engine management associated with the 6.5 TD engines.

If you have an H1 that has been properly maintaned, and you continue to properly maintain it - you will likely not have any unexpected problems. Most H1 horror stories you have heard are associated with a "used" H1 that did not have regularly scheduled maintenance & the new owner is beside him/herself.

Keep in mind that there are only a few hundred H1's produced each year, compared to 30,000 or so H2&3's produced, so the technicians and mechanics rarely get to see & work on them...making it take more time & cost more at the dealer. The H1 systems (geared hubs, ctis, etc) are unique, and dealers do not commonly "stock" very many H1 parts & are unfamiliar with troubleshooting these systems, making them tend to replace more than they need to so the customer can get back on the road quickly.

Many H1 owners rely on the "Hummer Maintenance CD" and the HML & do their own maintenance because it's a very easy truck to work on & in many cases it's quicker to do the maintenance repair yourself than go to the dealer & wait for parts.

You can see why many H1's are in ill repair - if you wheel on a regular basis (severe operation), just the C service needs to be done every 6K miles & the dealer cost is over $1,200 to perform it.

I'm not particularly mechanically inclined, but I do all my own maintenance, and have not had any problems in 45k miles. I wheel with a group of other H1's owners that have had similar experience.

Good luck, there are several resources to look into before buying an H1. Get a good one & enjoy it!

Newer models are neccessarily more reliable than older years. '92's are really reliable from what I have heard. The 6.5NA and the 6.2L engines are really good but could be a little piggish.

I love my H2 nut would also like to eventually get an H1. I also have this same ? as quoted above:

How reliable are the newer models? Later years, 04, 05, 06? The Alpha?

Just curious - I would love to get a reliable used H1 down the road, assuming the newer models are more reliable than the older ones...
