i was reading the manual and it states that an oil change indicator will light up when an oil change is necessary. is everyone changing their oil on a mileage basis or are you waiting for the system to generate the oil change message??

system is a good reminder if you forget to check your mileage -- but I wouldn't rely solely on it.

But isn't changing the oil supposed to be fun? When mine is ready (only 700 miles so far), I plan on doing the first change. Do you even need a jack? Are there any grease fittings or are the joints all sealed.

GM spent millions of dollars on researching this system, as well as other manufacturers who utilize the same type of system.
The system looks at many things such as ambient temperature at time of startup, how long the car ran while up to operating temperatures, engine rpm while the engine is running, etc. This information is compared against an algorithm programmed for the type of oil required, and the PCM controls the light. It is pretty darn accurate.
I ran my Vette down to 25 percent before changing, and the few times I sent I the oil for analysis, it always came back as having a TBN of about 7 or higher (11 being max, 4 being change the oil). Does it work, very well, and very accurately.
Just remember to reset each time, and to use the required GM spec for the oil, or a better spec.
Normal dino oil has been improved over the past years, and oils with the SUNBURST symbol are amazingly better than oils without the symbol, or oils produced 10 years ago.

I should add that if you go to an oil type air filter, don't rely on this system. It is based on a paper air filter, and paper filters filter the air a lot better than an oil/foam type filter (K&N comes to mind).
