Bonus or Not
Guy works for me recently borrowed $400 from my company. On a scale of 1-10 he's a 7 as far as an employee. Had he NOT borrowed any $$ he would have gotten an Xmas bonus of $100.00. Should I still bonus him?

Why not give him the bonus? (assuming he paid it back). What does borrowing money have to do with not getting a bonus for good work?

Re: Bonus or Not
Forgot to add that he JUST borrowed it last week. Will pay back after 1st of year.
Does that change your answer?

Re: Bonus or Not
I guess if I were in your position would boil down to what he used the money for. If he's a good guy and has been a good employee and need some $$$ because he was down on his luck I would consider it.

Re: Bonus or Not
Would you have given him the bonus had he not asked for the $$?
I think you should leave the $400 out of it. Base the bonus on his job performance during the year.
If he doesn't pay you back after the 1st, then sue his ass.

Re: Bonus or Not
Yes he should get the bonus, one has nothing to do with the other in that respect.
Since you need to show the $100 on his W2 (assuming it's not a cash bonus under the table), cut a separate check for the bonus and have him sign it back to you and then he'll only owe you $300 after the 1st and it's all legal for the tax man.
Or if you really trust him and are in the Christmas spirit, give him the bonus and get back the full $400 later. That's what I'd probably do for a good employee.....

Re: Bonus or Not
About 11 years ago, I got a new job right before Christmas, like the week before. I was really excited about the job, but I was also getting married and going on my Honeymoon about 3 weeks after Christmas (my new boss knew all about that when he hired me). Anyway, during that first week of work we had a Christmas lunch and he paid for everything. I thought that was nice because I was new and all. But after lunch he passed out checks to everyone, including me. I was so shocked because I really did not expect anything. The check was for $50. Later in the day I went to him and thanked him for thinking of me and I told him I really did not expect anything. He just said he was glad I was there. I still think about that and tell that story all the time when people bitch about their boss. That was one of the best jobs I have ever had. I say give him the bonus, if he had to ask you for money he must need it. Then if he does not pay you back you can always take $50 out of each paycheck until the debt is paid off. Christmas is about giving.

Re: Bonus or Not
What a stupid question........and even more stupid to have to ask on an internet forum.....
IMHO
Isn't a bonus given out to employees for "work performed"...???
I echo COHUMMER, what does him having to borrow some money have to do with that?

It's because I hadn't chimed in yet. I was going to ask if he had a hot g/f or wife that could help work off the interest.

Re: Bonus or Not
no DRTYMAN.........I'm not crabby......
But come on JamesT..................
The guy is a good worker, he needs a little help so he gains the strength to ask you for it, you lend it to him knowing he will pay you back.....So why then knowing the guy needs some help and is in a financial bind, would you even want to take a bonus away from someone for the good work they have performed for your business?
