Hell, GM can't even fit the 6.6 Duramax into the H2 engine bay. When you think about it, the engine bay is pretty small in the Hummer, and the wheel wells take up a LOT of space in the lateral front of the bay. Having to put in an 8.1 would mean an angled, longitudinal mount, and that's something that would require a hell of a lot of new engineering. Pass that along to the consumer in the form of higher sticker pirces, and still no rebates, and I just don't think GM will sell that many.
Give the 6.0 some time as the standard H2 engine, and once the initial R&D costs are paid off, (Even as much as GM saves by platform sharing, it's still expensive to develop a new engine and powetrain platform) and then we'll see some engine options. I'd love to see the 8.1, and I've never driven one. I've driven the 6.0 and the 5.3, and I loved them both.
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!!
