They will always look flat, that is the way 2D pics come out. As already mentioned pics from close to the ground often help emphasize angles/terrain etc, but they don't need to be. Also, some pics can look good without having anything extreme in, just nicely framed.

Othertimes showing more of the obstacle than is reuired helps in giveing the whole picture;

I didn't take any of the above pics, and the photographic quality of them may not be the highest, but I think they show what the vehicle was doing quite well, and will hopefully give you some ideas.
