I suppose you would have to add the cost of higher pressure door shocks to be able to open the liftgate with that one. That's a cool idea, but sort of irrelevant when you have a rack.

Look at these cans!!

Planning a road trip? Going off-roading? Maybe you just want to be prepared? The SMA 5 gallon Jerry Can is a must to store water or gasoline while on the go. This can has a latex lining that creates a longer life and prevents corrosion. The SMA Jerry Can's are the best quality can on the market. They have a latching lid closure and spout attachment, which protects the environment from harsh fuel vapors and fuel leakage. This 5 gallon Jerry can is available in Red, Blue, or Yellow. Check out our 2.5 gallon Jerry Can, available separately in Red. (Spout is also sold separately).

MSRP:

OUR PRICE: $49.95

$42.46

well I wouldn't want the bracket/holder because I wouldn't want the cans upright. But that can is cool because of the places for the straps. One thing for sure, they wouldn't move!

Ya, doesn't that make sense? We are trusted to pump our own gas...unless it's in a can. I travel to Oregon about once a year and I always forget, I get out and grab the pump and pump boy always comes runnin.

So these are the ones we were talking about a few days ago? I could definately see those with rubber matting glued to the side laying flat {or on edge if floor space is important to you) strapped down. Rubber matt preventing scratches to rack and slippage.

A couple of concerns.

1. Venting - I'm guessing they would be OK on a hot day on the roof with no vent?

2. Spillage with them on their sides - the caps would need to be really reliable, especially with the first concern.

hmmmm.

Nah. They don't come in black and look silly strapped to the $2,000,000,000 Gobi rack.

GOBI sells the Scepter Military Jerry Cans. I have heard from a few sources that they are the best on the market. Also, they will not scratch up your GOBI rack like a metal Jerry Can.

Racer, do you plan on attending Moab at all this year? If so, I bet you could ask nicely and someone would bring you some.

What are you guys using? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>Gas stations.

I've never been so far off-road that I'm worried about gas, and if I did I can't imagine getting somewhere that only 5 gallons will save the day. I really don't like having a potential bomb on my roof either when wheelin'.

However, should I think I'm going to be that far from a gas station, I'd take along four mil surplus jerry cans. You can get bases that they strap to that could no doubt be adapted to a Gobi rack. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

You need to go farther off-road. And since your already sitting on 30 gallons or so, what's another 5 or ten on the roof?

Seriously, I pretty much agree - there are only a few places I would take spare fuel along with me - it's the WATER cans I'm REALLY interested in. I'm mostly out in the desert when I'm off road - and you can never have too much water out there!

After what happened during an event last year I'll carry spare gas.

I was in the back of a 12-15 truck train. As junior guy on the event team my job was pick-up trail markers set by the leader and to assist any stragglers.

One guy in our group refused to turn on his radio because it interrupted his music. (BTW, the one time I heard his music he was listening to Barry Manilow.)

Anywho, that guy was three or four trucks ahead of me. One truck between us was taking it slow. We and a few trucks fell behind and were trying to catch up. Somewhere in that catch-up process the lead truck called for a head count.

Barry Manilow was MIA. No dust trail, no radio contact, nothing.

So there I was in the middle of no f'n where, enough gas to comfortably get back to town but not enough to go find someone who may very well have missed a trail marker, lead him back to the trail and then home. I had my wife and daughters. What to do?

About the time I figured I'd rather let the coyotes eat him and not my family, he turned up. Had he not, he might have been in big trouble and I would have felt like crap for leaving someone behind.

Spare gas is like life insurance. With any luck I'll not need it and when I do, it'll only be once.

FWIW! </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Do these (or any other plastic cans) NOT swell when hot?
