I don't get why anyone would want to spare his life, he is to pay for his deeds, the fact that he seems to have changd hi way is not a reason to let him off easy.

I think that in this case it should have lasted a couple of days, add to the needle some bamboo splinters under the nails, slit the eyelids and put him under out in the hot sun with just enough water to keep him going for a few days,
