Your doing all this work on it, and i cant even figure out how to put on my rear lamp brush guards, then again handy work defintly does not run in the family.

after all this work you could probably sell it for more than you bought it. Also which engine does it cuase didnt they offer two different engine options.

This is the original heater, correct. You can buy the new one from AM General for something like $4,000. Or you can get a 1992/1993 unit for about $400-$700. Or, like I want to do, carefully take it out, disassemble it, and replace the components, and then reinstall it. I think I want to build a whole new unit actually and put it in.

Well will most likely be a lot less expensive than 4g's. That should be one hell of a project. At least summer is approaching (I think) so heater wont be needed much

I have begun to install the acoustic dampening material. The foam-like pipe insulation has gone in very easily so far, and fills the spaces in the doors/pillars nicely.

Here is the foam in the passengers side, up around the roof. Looks sort of like what was in there!

For the smaller areas, instead of HUSHMat or something else thin and expensive, I opted for:


I will be amazed if it works, but if I think the foam works, I can't see why this wouldn't. I found it at walmart, and it's about $0.50/SQ Foot! But if anyone ever tears this truck apart, they're going to be in for a colorful surprise!

Why the restoration? Was it in bad shape when you found it?

So far, with just one door completed, and some of the B and A pillars stuffed with the insulating foam, it appears that the interior has indeed quieted down some. I have no way to measure this unfortunately.

No, it was just too loud on the highway, and I wanted to bring the haze out of the paint. It is 13 years old, and the paint has faded like most cars from that time. I figured it would be fun, and a good experience. It's really not been very difficult so far, and it's been rather inexpensive.

So far:
3x foam mats= $60
2x Small foams= $12
Paint cleaners= $15
Tape, plastic linings= $15

As for other items:
Drivers side windshield with gasket= $100
New CV boot= $15
New spline seal= $15

Hood with the left refinished with Meguire's 3-step and Meguire's Gold Class, a patch on the right with just the Meguire's Gold Class, and the rest on the right as it was when I got it:

Cool project. Its amazing what some of those paint products can do. I use the meguires clay bar on my vette and it literally looks like it was just repainted after you get done. No swirls at any angle. It takes like 3.5 hrs on a vette though.

Thanks! What a lot of work though! I can see why if you had a professional shop do this it would probably cost a fortune. But the difference is astounding. Makes you think twice about how old this truck really is, even though it is hard to tell in these photos.

I detailed my HMCO once. Key word being once. It took close to ten hours, after that I decided that it is well worth the 150.00 to have a local place deal with it. Plus the results are far better then anything I every achieved.

Yeah but for 150 bucks the local shop wont do everything Aubs is doing.

Example...my neighbor just had his twin turbo supra done. A FULL out exterior detail. Cars 14 yrs old so paint was a tad worn and is black. 50 bucks an hour for 11 hours. I tell you what though the car looks better than it did in 1993.

A regular detail will run 150-200+ for a large vehicle. To do anything other than this will cost you. At least around here thats what it goes for.
