Re: New H3 MPG Ratings
i dont think i have ever had mileage that high!
i wonder what the real numbers would be for the adventure package?
i have averaged about 13 mpg over the last 20 months with about 14000+ miles so far.
just wait until these tires wear out and i go to 35x12.5's.
i assume that the mileage would drop to 10-11 /gallon.
sure glad i dont have to drive too much!!!

Re: New H3 MPG Ratings
I wonder about the quality of gas in Mexico...?
But Cabo would be a great place to have an H3. Saw a lot of H2's down there a year ago.

Re: New H3 MPG Ratings - with some FJ bashing!
there are lots of h3's here in cabo now.
bunches of h2's
and about 4 or 5 h1 alpha's
i get alot of use out of mine here.
its great because you can still drive on the beaches and in the dunes here
the h3 sure isnt anything like the h1 in the dunes though!
a buddy of mine scales super soft dunes like nothing in his h1.
i have to hit them with a ton of momentum to even have a chance!
the wider 12.5" foot print will surely help me to float a little better once i upgrade to the larger tires.
i only run the premium fuel here, as the regular is just ridiculous.
the gas stations constantly run out of fuel here, especially in the rainy season, so the fuel constanly has impurities in it-we go through alot of fuel filters.
i am impressed with this truck. i bounce down the washboards all the time and have very few squeaks so far.
i only wish the option of on the fly tire pressure adjustment was available. that would be a great feature, although very few people would actually see the value in it. and r&d/production costs would probably not make it feasible.
a friend of mine bought an fj cruiser about 1o months ago.
it is lifted and has large tires and is good in the sand, but it already rattles like an old car! it does seem to have quite a bit more power off the line than my h3 though.
i like the look and feel of the fj (properly lifted and with tire upgrades-the stock one looks like a pacer!), but i think toyota really blew it with the door design as there are no center posts between the front and back doors. these washboard roads really work a vehicle and the doors on the fj squeak and rattle. he only has like 9000 miles on his so far!
how do i like my h3?

Re: New H3 MPG Ratings
Not sure why the mileage needs adjusting in all cases. Here is my average mileage last night on my commute home in my Touareg last night, driving a steady 50-60 in traffic:
21.7 mpg.
Sorry about the phone camera quality.
(The yellow light at the top is because one of my turn signal lights is out.)

those gauges can be misleading. are you certain that was AVERAGE mpg?
i have noticed that on vehicles with flo scan type fuel efficieny indicators, they are particularly sensitive to driving conditions at the moment.
for instance, at 60mph that gauge would show three wildly different results depending upon whether you were;
1) at a constant rpm to maintain 60mph (assuming a flat surface),
2) coasting, or
3) accelerating to 60mph.
i like those monitors. we have them on our boat and it provides all sorts of great info including fuel economy, engine hours, ignition history, rpm history, booster load, etc. the ones in boats are more reliable since boats are typically operated at a relatively constant rpm, unlike cars.
i would be curious to know your lifetime to date average mpg for your touareg.
i do not have the fuel indicator in my h3, but am sure the lifetime average is around 13-14mpg, as i calculate it after each fill up - i am an accountant. that is on an adventure package and my typical driving is short trips with about 30% off-pavement. sure beats the mileage from my last three trucks though!!!!

Re: New H3 MPG Ratings
yes. that is what i get.
why not offer a small block v8 that would get similar gas mileage for this size vehicle. i used to have a 1/2 ton chevy with a v8 and got over 18 mpg on the highway. any thoughts?

Re: New H3 MPG Ratings
Right on the money for me in my 07 adventure...to echo the same sentiment...at least it's more correct now...I usually get around 290 - 330 miles per tank depending on how much highway driving I'm doing...and of course if the wind is blowing hard or not

Re: New H3 MPG Ratings
Just did a highway only trip,
Miami to Vero Beach -
Vero Beach to Orlando -
Orlando to Vero Beach -
Vero Beach to Miami
Top speed 70, Cruise control over 95% of the time, Regular Gas, 1 person (200 lb) 300 lbs gear, Tires 40 PSI, around 600 miles total,
Got 19.9 MPG

Yes the "O" with a "/" through it next to the rating indicates average MPG.
Instantanious readings don't have that indicator, and you are right, it can be all over the place.
I owned TWO Grand Wagoneers, just a couple of years ago. They got 9 to 11 MPG.
I set the monitor for every fill up. Average per tankful is usually 17 to 19. The 6 speed tranny helps some toward that, I'm sure.

Re: New H3 MPG Ratings
well, i am sure that along with the 6 speed, the street tires and a way more aerodynamic profile really make the mileage better in that vehicle.
when i changed from 31 * 10.5 AT's to 33 * 12.5 MT's in a 95 bronco with a 302, my mileage went from 15 to about 11. That is a ~30% reduction in fuel economy just from a different tire footprint!
once the 33's wear out on my h3 i will go with 35*12.5 bfg AT's, as the MT's are typically louder and just kill the fuel economy.

Re: New H3 MPG Ratings
I can't imagine anyone making a buying decision based on the difference between 15 or 16 mpg.
If you were that concerned about fuel economy, you wouldn't be looking at these vehicles.
