Airing down on ice will not help and may make traction worse in the right conditions. You want the tires as narrow as possible so as to put more pounds per square inch on the ground. Do not lock in the 4wd, just keep it in all wheel drive , you want the wheels to free roll as much as possible. Nothing beats studs or chains on ice. Going from NY to Colorado now I can tell you. I have a set of chains for everything, including my motorhome. With a 2 wheel drive rear wheel drive vehicle like a pickup or van you wont go 10 feet in colorado without chains.
