NYS VTL section, 375-41 states that no vehicle shall display any colored or flashing lights other than those required by law except as perscribed...
In NYS, Volunteer Fire/EMT can by VTL 375-41/ 4 & 5 display one Blue or one Green light, for use when responding to an alarm, if they are a member of a Volunteer fire dept. or volunteer ambulance service, and have been authorized in writing by the agency's chief or successor. They must obey all traffic laws.
Now how many people have seen Volly cars lit up brighter than police cars?
In any rate, they for the most part have been told by their chiefs that if they abuse the privledge, it will be taken away. It works better when the fire dept. is locatd in an area that is policed by more than just the County.
here look at this. our fire department has more trucks than nyc and LA combined.

WASTED TAX DOLLARS!
Theres a hole in my head, where the rain comes in
One of our local departments just purchased a brand new heavy rescue vehicle using federal homeland security grant money. In the past two years they have performed three "heavy rescues". One was a vehicle extrication requiring a Hurst tool.
In a second vehicle extrication they literally cut a car in half AND removed the roof - Amusing when they could have removed the unfortunate driver through the passenger door without using a single tool.
In their third heavy rescue, they shored up a collapsing structure and used chain saws to cut away a fallen tree. The structure? Some guy's lawn tractor shed.
But I now sleep more soundly knowing that our homeland security tax dollars are protecting me in the event that terrorists target "Cornhole Corners", PA.
