I don't know guys, $2,000 for a roof rack is too much coin. I just saw one of these racks get eaten by a tree with 3 MAJOR bends down one side. IMO, the rails on the sides should be strong enough to lean against a tree without bending (a common sense design feature for anyone who drives off road). After they get bent they really look like crap.

I can't speak for the rack you are talking about, but it would take a lot of force to bend the steel pipes on this rack. Not sure how strong the factory rails are, but that would be the weak point before the rack, that's for sure.

Det,
They are just steel tubes. They aren't strong at all, certainly not strong enough to lean against. The factory rails will do far better than the steel tubes. I've already seen it.

Having run many a mile of steel pipe while working as an electritian I beg to differ.
It depends on the width and thickness of the tubes for starter.

If you really believe in the strength of your rack than go do a serious lean against a tree and see what happens. I'm talking about a lean where a majority of weight of the truck is tossed in to a tree at the top. It won't survive with this much force and the way they are currently designed.

First of all, they are Roof Racks. Not overhead nerf bars.
However, assuming it does bend. I'd take the 2k loss in my rack over the damage that would happen to my roof without the rack anyday.

I had $100 damage to my gutter (being fixed today) Here is the obstacle that ate 2 gutters and 2 roof racks. That is $4k in roof racks, one of which was only 2 days old. A smart design would be able to handle this pressure.

2 gutters and 2 roof racks? How? Did noone learn there lesson the first time?
What is the smart design?
I have seen many racks, but none as thick as the TC one.
I'd like to see a pic of the busted rack though. What brand was it?

Det,
Sometimes you just have to get through the ugly and expect the damage. Going up this obstacle I bent my gutter, going opposite direction I missed by about 4". We have rock rails to protect us from these things. A 2K roof rack should do this at a minimum IMO. I just paid $1500 for steel rock rails with rock guards for that very reason. You simply can't control the trail, sometimes it's just necessary to take a certain line or drag over a certain spot. 3 other H1's and 1 H2 made it through this obstacle with no damage.
I don't know the brand of the rack but can tell you it makes no difference. None of them would hold up here and they SHOULD.

That's what I'm asking. What would make them hold up.
I've seen many many racks, and I like a lot of things about different racks. However, I have not seen one more Heavy Duty than the one I have. If you have seen an SMA Brushguard in person, the rack tubes are similar in size and weight to those.
I just don't see them bending unless you really whack it into something with a lot of throttle. That is a tough son of a bitch. The 2 piece rack takes a minimum of 3 people per section to lift onto my roof.
The only thing that could be considered a weak point is the brackets. But they are necesary to lift the rack over the top of the roof.

I tell you what, please send pictures and purchasing information on those roof racks that will support a 7,000 pound vehicle leaning into a tree when you find them. I want to buy a set. But I think they are going to be a tad bit more than 2K in cost...
