Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Tonight's medley (in small quantities, of course).........
(1) Balvenie Doublewood - Unbelievably good. I've come full circle on Scotch, as evidenced by my purchases lately. Now I can't turn away from a single malt on sale. I'm pursing Scotch from each of the regions (Highlands-multiple, Lowlands, Islay, Campbelltown, etc).
(2) Crown Royal - Excellent, but Canadian whiskey just isn't the same after getting into the single malt Scotches. I still ove the CR because it is so smooooth.
(3) Next, I'm going for the Glenfiddich 12 yr. I've read where this is #20 in overall scotch sales throughout the world and #1 among single malts. That doesn't mean it's the best, of course. The price point is pretty good on this one and the scotch is excellent.
I have many bottles I haven't yet touched. The one I'm most excited about is the Laphraoig since I'm told it's the strongest and "nastiest" of all the scotch whiskys. Sounds like a good challenge as an acquired taste.

Latest purchases. Neither are particularily outstanding. Of the two, I prefer the Aberlour.

Dont be getting all controlling with me arshole, you have no idea how much this envioronment is damaging me emotionally - dont you know there is a war going on over here, OK I know I am not actually anywhere near the "Front Line" (actually a couple of countries away) but I have seen things man, things that you wouldn't understand - just this morning I saw a guy who had met someone who had talked to a guy who had been nearer the "Front Line" than us - so dont be direspecting me with this tone of voice ****e.
You know when I get back I am going to be an arshole for the rest of my life and blame it all on my days over here - you are just going to have to deal with it.
So now that we have that out in the open - is the 18th OK for you - I will need picking up at the airport.

Hey Afgahnistan, Iran and Iraq are only a couple of countries away from here - I have Russia to the north and China to the East - the pressure of what could happen is eating me up - I could go crazy over here.
Its 1.30am - I am on night shift - the darkness man the darkness - there could be anything out there - I am telling you I have SEEN things - never get out of the boat.
Oh and Borat is in Vegas right now - but I will let him know you said Hi when he gets back.

Yeah - stuck out here for a month - doing a favour for a friend of mine who was short of a man to cover a drilling project here - when I got here I drew the short straw and here I am on nights, -25C, stuck here with 11 guys - none of whom speak a word of English - its like John Carpenters "The Thing" I keep waiting for one of them to come stumbling in shouting "we have found something in the ice" or with a horeshoe crab stuck to his face.
Man the nights are just flying by - only 7 days and 15 hours to go. And then its

Sounds like Prudhoe, but warmer! You only got six days and a wake-up! Then you'll be able to go blow all that cash!

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Well..........another first. Japanese Whisky. My brother-in-law has some interesting booze. He pulled out a bottle of friggin Louis XIII tonight. That's a $1700 bottle of congac! No, I didn't get to drink that. He's been holding out on the bottle for over 20 years.
I did get to drink this, and it wasn't half bad.

A couple weeks ago in a Sushi restaurant in Manhattan, I had some unbelievable 18-yr Jap whiskey (not surprisingly, I can?t recall the name of the whiskey or the restaurant, though the latter was about a mile or two from the Intercontinental/Barclay and was in a big mall with a Borders bookstore. Interestingly, the 12-yr of the same whiskey tasted like crap, but the 18-yr was amazing. As I keep writing, I realize that I am adding nothing to the discussion.

Suntory Yamazaki 18 Year Old Single Malt Whiskey.
I had a bottle once. It lasted 2 nights.
Good call. I'm gonna get me a bottle tommorrow. It's $150/bottle but worth every drop.

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Its a sad day when the pursuit of the best whisky turns to Japan. This is a major sore point with the Scots - we support the American attempts at Whiskey - because lets face it the tradition of making good whisky was brought there by the Scots and the Irish originally - but Japan - WTF do they know about the tradition of whisky making - they took an age old tradition and bastardised it to mass produce the crap that they call whisky. Hell we have whisky that is still maturing in barrels that is older than the original 1929 "whisky" that they produced.
I am not anti Japanese by the way - but I am against wankers attempting to copy the traditions of generations.
One of the reasons that Sean Connery (in fact pretty much the reason) is not actually welcome in Scotland is because he became the face of Suntory Whisky - believe me he was ripped to shreds in Scotland for that traitorous act.
There are over three hundred fine Single Malt Whisky's from Scotland to choose from - you guys haven't even scratched the surface yet - dont f##k with a heritage and tradition that goes back further than before we even knew Japan existed.

Re: In pursuit of the best WHISKEY......
Come on, Andy. You the Japs make the best whisky.
I'm doing some calculations now... 300 scotches, at $50/bottle avg = $15,000. Less $700 already spent. Great! I've still got $14,300 to go!

LOLZ at the Japanese outrage. Scots still make the best whiskey IMO.
But to say one country can and one cannot is funny because the Japanese will eventually perfect the technique and go one better. And they do it with more discipline and cleanliness.
Sean Connery knows his whiskey. He's been exposed to the best and can afford the best.
For him to publicly say Japan makes a better whiskey must hurt in many ways.
I am sure of one thing though, when it comes to cars, electronics, fashion, sushi and sake, the Scots don't belong.
But them drunkies still make a wicked scotch.
