OK, somebody talk me out of an H1
I currently have a '05 SUT and really enjoy the comfort level very much. I do not use the truck as a DD, and only for weekends. Which basically consists using it because it sits all week. Alot of use comes during the summer towing the race car. Other than a few door dings, the truck is in great shape. That being said, I find the powerband kinda muted. It tows nicely, but has a lower tow capacity than what I'd like.
And then I start looking at H1's. Right now, the price point for a basic entry H1 is right were I like it. Currently I'm looking at a '96 4dr soft top with a turbo. Mileage is low for the year, and it looks in great shape. I haven't seen it personally, yet. What can I expect going from an H2 to an H1? I understand the ride will be a little diffeent from the H2, but hey, I drove everything from MUTT's to HMMWV's to tanks in the military.
Anyways, any pointers as to what to look for, or opinions, that would be great.
This is what I'm looking at:

Re: OK, somebody talk me out of an H1
Rooster....DO IT....I had an h3, went to an H3 Alpha (which I still have) and then picked up an H1 also and I love it. Its definitely is not as road friendly as my H3, the H1 is sluggish for sure on the highways and it has a lot of mass passing and stopping quickly are not an option its a different driving style. that being said I love it and the inconveniences that it has in that aspect are part of what make me love the car. Tech wise (I have an '03) I've had an air conditioning compressor break needed to be replaced with a new one, and needed a new circuit or something like that for the fan selector. I believe I have a coolant leak and a CTIS front leak, I'm not a tech savvy guy so I don't know how to fix these myself so I'll be taking it for those problems too. However what can I expect from an 11 year old truck to have a few problems. All part of the game.
As for tech questions compared to model years this is a great site to look at it, you can see about the 94's and read about the other years as well to help make an educated decision. http://www.lynchhummer.com/Changes/h...ges.index.html

Re: OK, somebody talk me out of an H1
Thanks for the input! My question, how are they on towing? I'm looking at towing a 24' toy hauler with a weight of around 7k total. The H2 can handle that, but is maxed out (on paper). My options are swap out to an H1 with a turbo diesel, or do a Duramax conversion on the H2.

Not trying to talk you out of an H1 because you should own one but not for towing. Although the towing capacity may exceed your H2 by 1500 lbs or so they really don't tow well at all. Any incline or mountain pass on even an interstate and you will be slowing down and crawling with the H1. I always use my H2 for towing. So, I would opt for the Duramax conversion!

Hmm. that's something that I had heard. Another and less expensive option to the Duramax conversion is hopping up the 6.0L engine. They, interestingly enough, share the same block as the LS series motor. I've read that a pick up long runner intake and long tube headers really wake these motors up. Well, with a tune also.
Thanks for the info!
BTW, heres the H2
