I took my truck out for a ride today and when it shifted from 1st to 2nd there was a big clunk. After that it was stuck in third gear. I could manually get it into 1st, 2nd or 3rd but when in drive it was stuck in 3rd. I shut the truck off/on and all is OK now. Any ideas what it could have been?

sounds like what happened to me
it's just a module that communicates to the trannie; it's located behind the ignition, a quick fix

the dealer told me to drive it in (40 mi)
I questioned it & they said its a "big truck with a big engine" it can handle it just fine
agh agh

<H5>Condition</A></H5>


Some customers may comment on one or more of the following conditions:</P>
<UL type=BULLET>
<LI>The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is ON.
<LI>The transmission is stuck in third gear.
<LI>The instrument cluster is inoperative. </LI>[/list]

Upon investigation, one or all of the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0740,
P0753, P0758, P0785, P1860 may be set.</P><A name=ss2-1371241><A

<H5>Cause</A></H5>


The most likely cause of this condition may be a loss of power to the
transmission on circuit1020. This loss of power may be caused by an open
in the ignition switch. This condition may also be the result of an incorrect
installation of an aftermarket electronic device such as a remote starter or
alarm system.</P><A name=ss3-1371241><A

With the ignition switch in the RUN position, test for battery voltage at the
appropriate fuse listed below.</P>

If battery voltage is present at the fuse, inspect circuit1020 between
the fuse and the transmission for possible opens. If battery voltage is not
present at the fuse, replace the ignition switch using the Ignition Switch
Replacement procedure in the Steering Wheel and Column sub-section of the
applicable Service Manual. Refer to group number 2.188 of the parts catalog for
part description and usage.</P>


If the vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket electronic device and the DTCs
are being set when the device is being used, verify that the appropriate fuse
listed above is being supplied battery voltage during operation. If voltage is
not present at this fuse, these DTCs will be set due to lack of power at the
solenoids. This condition is most likely to occur with an incorrectly installed
remote starting system. If this is the case, refer the customer to the installer
of the system for corrections.</P><A name=ss4-1371241><A

The oil that is used on these air filter elements may be transferred onto the
Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor causing contamination of the sensor. As a result, the
Grams per Second (GPS) signal from the MAF may be low and any or all of the
concerns listed above may occur. </P>


When servicing a vehicle with any of these concerns, be sure to check for the
presence of an aftermarket reusable, excessively oiled air filter. The MAF, GPS
reading should be compared to a like vehicle with a OEM air box and filter under
the same driving conditions to verify the concern.</P>


Transmission or engine driveability concerns that are the result of the
installation of an aftermarket reusable, excessively oiled air filter are not
considered to be warrantable repair items.</P>

Very common problem when you get your oil changes anywhere but the dealer!

I saw that on 20/20, all of these quick lube places secretly get rid of their oil by spraying customer's air filters with the used oil. They don't have to pay as much for the disposal fees. This is one reason why pollution levels have risen drastically.
