Oil Chg Interval?

Thanks for the replies on my previous oil change question, 1 follow-up, several of you mention letting the auto oil monitor system notify me when it needs the next oil change. I currently have just over 3000 miles on my new 2006 H3. The system has not told me to change the oil yet, and I understand depending on driving habits & conditions, it can go upwards of 6-10k miles before it tells you to change the oil. However, I have not done my very First oil change yet. Are you saying to let the monitoring system dictate All oil changes including the very first one, or just subsequent oil changes after the 1st is done? I don't want to run it too long and damage the engine since its still running on the original factory oil/filter. Thanks very much.

I did my first change at 1400 miles I am still debating to do next one bettween 4,400 miles + 5000 miles on truck or go with the monioring system .If your leasing go by the system if your going to keep it passed 100,000 miles and you change oil yourself cost is low and it has to be better for motor(I mean Engine... motor runs wipers as stated in previous thread).


H3 gray aventure ,sunroof, steps ,roof rack ,smokers package ,window vents, sunroof visor, hard spare tire cover, h3 valve caps , mudflaps and K&N filter 3,200+ miles

Thanks for the reply fourfourto. I think I'll go ahead & get it done now even though the system doesn't say to do so, and then see how it goes from there, making sure I reset the oil monitoring system of course so that its accurate on next change. If it goes over 4 or 5k on the next (2nd) oil change I may also go ahead & just change it since I am doing my own. Something just bothers me about going 6-10k on 1 oil change!

this may be a dumb question but how do you find the % of oil life left. my 2003 silverado had it through the stearing wheel controls. have not been sucessfull finding it on the hummer.

As First Hummer told me just call On Star they will e-mail you the monthly the status of you whole truck including the oil % left.

I change oil the first time after 600-800 miles, use Mobil 1 oil filter, Mobil 1 SAE 5w-30 Synthetic oil. Since I drive less than 7,000 miles a year, I change the oil and filter every 6 months in the Hummer and Chevrolet Avalanche. Cost about seventy dollors a year for each vehicle as I do my own work. Cheap insurance!

I believe the change oil light comes on at about 15 percent remaining...can't remember the exact percentage, but it does not come on at zero life left.
I also believe you can read it via a Tech 2, but that does not help people who have not invested in this hand scanner.
This is my oil change schedule. I'm a firm believer in the GM oil life system. One reason, is I know some of the people who worked years on this project, and know the testing they did to confirm their algorithms. However, I will always perform my first oil change at approx. 1-2K miles, and from then on, let the computer tell me when to change the oil.
Only other times I would deviate is if I was running a foam air filter (which I will never do), and off-roading in dirt (especially sand), or if I was submerged in deep water. The computer cannot allow for extra dirt intake and foam filters are noted to do a poor job of filtering dirt when compared to a paper filter; therefore, the computer has no idea how much dirt is entering the engine.
The algorithms for the oil change light are based upon engine operating conditions at startup, how long the engine is run between startups, how hot it gets each drive cycle, and most importantly, the oil you use, and the fact that the engine is as well sealed as it was from the factory.
Oil grade is important. You must use oil that is specified by GM, this is what the algorithm is based upon. It knows how this oil will degrade over a period of time, when subjected to heat, cold, etc. Using a lower grade oil will not result in an accurate reading.
Using an oil that exceeds the specification such as a synthetic oil is ok.

I did my first oil change at approximately 1400 miles and stuck with conventional oil. Yesterday, with 5000 miles on the odometer I switched over to Mobil 1 synthetic and plan to change it every 5000 miles. It might be a little overkill but like someone else said it is cheap insurance to keeping you engine running like new.
