MAF sensor defect ?
Hi
I observed mig check engine light came on the other day (sometimes flashing), but being a long way from home, I slowed down checked engine oil and continued home.
Went to the shop the other day, the told me that i needed a new MAF sensor, but they would need to get back to me with the price. Told me to drive slowly, but no problem.
Yesterday the car almost died on me, and is very reluctant to drive past 1500 RPM.
Got the price for the MAF today 800$ ??? (In Denmark).
that?s outrageous -
If I step on the it, it will nearly stop, and it's not driving well, Do you guys think that the MAF sensor is doing all this ?
Can i disassemble the MAF and fix anything myself (What?s inside it anyway)
Do you have a good cheap place where I can order on online and have it sent to Denmark ?
Regards
Rene

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
An inexpensive attempt at a fix may be to use some cleaner on the MAF wires...sometimes they'll get dirty and/or oily (especially if using an oiled aftermarket filter like a K&N/Volant, etc.) and will cause issues. You should be able to get a specific MAF cleaner at an auto parts store or you can use electronics cleaner on it. Worst case you can use alcohol and a cotton swab...just be careful as the wires in the sensor are thin and fragile. Let it dry well and give it a shot...much cheaper than $800 and if it works you're good to go.

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
Let me know if you need one, as I have a new one at the house. PM me if interested and make offer. We should be able to ship to Denmark from the US right?

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
Clean the MAF sensor with carb cleaner and also clean the throttle body with the same. Open the butterfly valve and clean it really well. Codes set? what are they. If you have p0300 set you need to check your catalytic converter backpressure anything 1 psi and over will cause engine missfire on that bank and create A major lack of power.

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
I have had the best luck useing spray can of electrical parts cleaner . if you have an oiled air filter (K&N) they can cause this problem if over oiled . if it is bad and needs to be replaced i'm sure if you mail order one from the USA it won't cost any where near $800.00 .$300.00 includeing shipping and import fees should kill it dead.

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
Hi
Thanks alot. I don't have a KN filter. All engine part are stock.
I will try to disasembel to unit and clean it true. I think that I have both electric parts cleaner and carburator fluid at home.
tomp - Thanks a million for the offer, I will try the clean job, and if this dosn't help I will let you know. Shipping to Denmark shoudn't be a problem, just a lot of US shops won't do ship outside the US.
I haven't seen the error code. Went into a shop that had the TEC 2 code reader and he told me that ít was the MAF sensor. Not a lot of code reader in Denmark. I might just end up buying one myself. Can I buy any CAN2 bus readers ?

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
Rene, most power programmers have the ability to read the error codes as well as providing many nice upgraded features like more power

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
Hi Guys
Thanks for all your help so far. The Hummer have been sitting in my driveway for about 4 month, before the 1 (one) shop in Denmark was able to take it in (there are more shops, but not I would trust my car with)
After I changede the maf sensor --> nothing
Still giving maf sensor error and misfire on 2, 4, 6 and 8.
Changed the spark plug --> Nothing
Then suddenly the computer came on telling me no oil pressure. Checked oil, 1 cm above max ???? I have never put that much oil in it.
Well changed the oil on it, still no oil pressure.
This is what it looks like right now.
The shop tells me that the misfire was because of low oilpresure so the lifters (right word?) didn't open correctly.
Now they have to rebuilt the complete engine.
Any thoughts on what might have caused this, and please don't tell me I have been driving around with little or no oil

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
If you are having missfires all on one bank (bank 2 in your case) I can guarentee the right side catalytic converter has too much backpressure causing all cylinders on the right side to missfire. anything above 1 psi is excessive. As for no oil pressure I would check with a mechanical guage, could just be the sender or the gauge in the cluster.

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
Hi Humtech
I tried pulling the top of on the right side, no oil. I even tried a manuel oil pressure gauge.
The engine have been running a bit without enough oil pressure, so I need to do a complete overhaul.
But you might very well be right about the right catalytic converter. I will have a look at that.
Is there anyway to test this before I reinstall the engine ?

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
Rene,
Before you rebuild the motor, if you have some cash on hand, you might want to consider the Duramax Diesel. There is a post on it here:
http://www.elcovaforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27007&page=2&highlight=duramax+co nversion and I understand that it can be done for much less than Predator motorsport charges. It just seems like a good time to consider this since you already have the engine removed. Good luck!

Re: MAF sensor defect ?
No way I know of to check the cat for backpressure unless its running, buy if ya decide to go duramax which is a great idea you will be eliminating the cats anyway.

Sorry to hear about your problem! I sure would like to see more pictures of that Elanor Mustang in the back ground on the third picture. It looks great!
