Default Tranny...what would you do?

So my 3-4 clutch pack is out two shops in my are have quoted between $2500 and 3000 for an overhaul.

Should I try and find a rebuilt tranny or one that was removed from a wrecked H2 and just swap trannys....or should I pay the rebuild cost?

I am mechanically inclined but am not sure what all goes into swapping a tranny. Really doesn't seem too hard but I am not sure. Is it something I could do myself?

You can buy a new transmission from GMPartsOutlet for less than $1,700 and shouldn't cost more than $300 to have it swapped out by a good mechanic. I wouldn't tackle any transmission swap because you will need special tools and lift system.

That sounds high! AAMCO quoted me a rebuild price of $1650 on my 2004 H2 transmission in 2009 before I bought my current SUT. I went with it and was very happy with the rebuilt transmission. I don't think prices have gone up that much since 2009.

I paid $2250 last November for a rebuilt one with unlimited mileage. I had 133xxx miles.
The shop said is was a real SOB to put the new one in, plus the H2 computer needed to be hooked up to some machine to 'accept' the new tranny / codes, etc.

Yeah I was worried I'd run into issues midway the swap and then be screwed. So I def will not do the install myself then. Guess I'll just have to hunt for a cheap tranny shop that does good work.

One day I'd like to do the 4L80E swap

I'd caution about AAMCO, I've had one rebuilt there and it did not shift right when cold, and I could not get them to look into it, and not long ago I was with a guy who pulled a AAMCO rebuilt tranny apart because they wouldnt look at it again after he had had some problems, he found parts marked with the name of a local junkyard..

My 10 cents on AAMCO
