Default Transfer Case

I just had to have the transfer case replaced in my H3 - 15 months old, 13K miles, no off-road time (yet), mostly local street & highway miles. Had a grinding noise when stopping that started @ 9K. They cycled through 4H - 4HL - 4L then and the noise went away for while. The dealer says GM is very interested in this problem, as it appears a few others are now experiencing the same thing.

Yes they are; mine was just replaced at 18K and the BW rep took it right back for research. Mine was off-roaded, but that is not the problem.
442/Hmmm3 here is some more ammo for your noises. I'm still betting it might be the t/case.

Ed, thanks for posting the info about your H3's transfer case. I applaud your dealer for finding your problem and correcting it. You have no idea how frustrated fourfourto and I have been over what seems to be the same problem with ours. Lotus4s is experiencing the same problem now, too. Out of curiosity, what is build date of your H3?

What are the sounds? I have some linking and scuffing noises coming from mine, but only in low range. Stuff I have never heard before coming from a chain drive transfer case. To me, it sounds like the chain is loose and dragging on the case.

See this thread to actually hear the sound. This is from fourfourto's H3. Mine sounds very similar, but more muffled when INSIDE the H3. Look at #18 under the thread listed below. Let us know if yours sounds similar.

I don't have that sound. Mide only does it in low range between drive and coast. It really sounds like the chain is loose. Last time i messed with it, it only seemed to do it in second or third gear. Frist gear doesn't seem to make the noise. I wonder if I just have excessive slop in the transmission or in the chain of the transfer cae.
Also, with my bad ears I cant hear it with the windows rolled up, only when the windows are down.

Okay, definitely different. I'm sure one of the others here will have some ideas for you later today. Hope you find what the problem is soon.

Linus,

I've had the same noise you describe when coasting downhill in low gear over bumpy terrain. Sounds like a chain slapping the case. I reported it on one of my trips to the dealer buy they couldn't duplicate it and said "no problem found".......

Our dealer - and more specifically the service manager - have given me the best service I've ever gotten in all my years of buying and driving new cars. My H3 was built in June 2005, the same month we bought it. Even though this problem has been annoying, and I had to go more than a week with driving my old '93 F-150 back & forth to work - I still love the Hummer, and plan to keep 'er for many years to come.

Thanks for posting these sounds. These aren't the same as what I was hearing. Mine wasn't as loud, and it came from the front. It's hard to describe exactly, but it was more of a muted, grinding noise that would happen just as I was coming to a full stop. I thought it might be the brakes, at first, but it never happened when I applied the brakes just to slow down or do anything other than come to a complete stop. Also, the H3 didn't "jerk" or "jump" when stopping, like it might do with a brake problem (or like when ABS sometimes kicks-in). The service manager called me yesterday afternoon just to make sure everything was still OK (it is).
