Default Value went up!

In the rural county in Missouri I live in I was shocked when the personal property taxes (PPT) on my H2 came in the mail (after the election of course) and had gone up from what they were last year, even though it was a year older. PPT has always gone down on my vehicles as they aged, even old classics like a '65 Corvette only run 30 dollars a year in PPT, while new vehicles are obviously taxed the highest.
Thinking it was an error, I called the county assessors office and they said that they had been getting calls from H2 owners. They use sales for "comparable H2s" as their basis for taxation and sale prices for comparable mileage, condition and model year H2s went up over the last year for the sales they recorded on 136 H2s sold in the Missouri data base during 2010, so the tax did also. He said this 136 number also includes H2s sold to dealers at auction in Missouri. So two things are official now, our H2s are gaining in value, and county governements have found new ways to generate more taxes.

Hi i live in canada so this sounds strange to me, you have to pay ppt on your truck every year? Do you also pay tax when you first buy it? We pay 13% tax one time when we first buy a truck or car then each year we pay for lic plates only.

We pay a registration fee here in NH. No sales or income tax here though. My H2 and all other cars went up last year but only because the state raised the rates on the registration fee. How convenient. But I guess its better than instituting a sales tax or income tax. But usually the rate goes down while the vehicle is aging and depreciating. I'll see what happens when I renew this spring.

Yep, you pay yearly PPT on all cars, planes and boats here! Salex tax when you buy them too. One county instituted yearly PPT on docks at the Lake this year and it's raised an uproar! Since docks can't be considered real estate they had to find a way to tax them too. On the positive side sales tax on a new vehicle is only 4.5% in my county and plates are cheap.

In Arizona no ppt, but big license fee each year. It was like $450 this year for a 2004 hummer.
