Chivalry. Hello?!!
The weirdest thing happened to me yesterday. I just have to share it.
I went to my daughter's elementary school as I am the kindergarten room mom. Basically you volunteer to help with bake sales, coordinate their holiday parties....etc. Anzywazy, I was there for the "room mother meeting" in the library. I signed out and said goodbye to the security guy.
As I was leaving the building, a very larger foyer if you will (new and echoey), I heard some footsteps behind me. I look back and it was a uniformed man(I couldn't begin to tell you which branch- I think it was green and red) , he was smallish but fit and not very tall, sporting some huge glasses walking towards the door to exit. (Kinda looked like the guy that played the older Henry Pu Yi in "The Last Emperor".)
Now he was I'd say a good 20 feet from the door. So it was just that border line "Should I hold the door or not" kinda thing. I could have let it go. But I figured he saw me look back at him... and he had a briefcase/man bag thing, he was obviously serving our country in some way..... so I held the door. The door would have slammed in his face from the hinge delay.
The doors are quite large and heavy, so given the last minute decision I lose my balance a bit (don't snicker- I didn't fall) and had to step back towards the door to hold it. Here I was my sweet pregnant room mother self holding the door with a little smile waiting for him to reach the door.
Now he's coming, not hurrying mind you, and not smiling back. He gets to the door and walks right through. Doesn't bother to touch the door, just walks right through. No 'thank you', no smile- nothing.
Now that's screwed up. But I think "whatever.".
But THEN, after, he kind of lingers, just stops, there is another set of heavy doors to the outside, you know it had another little foyer thing. So still lingering, I think he must want me to go ahead- like a lady- and he will reach out and push the door and hold it for me to walk through- you know, a no words man but responds with reciprocation.
So I pause for a bit and head the 3 steps towards the door till I'm right on it. Well, jumpin jack flash doesn't reach to push open the door. He is still 3 steps back. I lunge and use my legs and arms push it open and hold it very briefly with extended arm for him to push as I get out to the concrete and he just walks on through! I had to stop and brace myself again. No attempt to touch it, no smile, no 'thank you'- nothing. Just keeps on walking. Can you believe it?! I was in shock.
Out of all my weird door holding experiences, even the "30 people pass and don't take over the deed 'don't worry I'm the doorman' " instances, this was the weirdest.
WTF?!

Re: Chivalry. Hello?!!
WTH is wrong with people today? Ahh yes, the "me generation" in it's finest form.
The least that guy could have done would be to offer you a smoke or a tip or something.
You should have faked some contractions right there while you were holding the door. hee hee hee, whoo whoo who, hee hee hee

Re: Chivalry. Hello?!!
It is sad, isn't it? I get SO mad when people do that. Men or women....but with men I find it particularly rude. I guess I grew up in a family where the man holds the door, and pulls out the chair - blah, blah, blah......but even if that wasn't the case, isn't it just common courtesy to say THANK YOU when someone does you a favor......which is basically what you're doing when you waste that second or two of your life holding that door for some other shmo.
It makes me nuts when people assume it's your freaking job to hold the door for them!!!

Re: Chivalry. Hello?!!
I would have opened the second door and when he got close, let go of it and knock him on his ass.

Said in a loud voice. My personal favorite.

I do that(without the yelling) all the time. I make sure that the words are dripping with sarcasm.

You made no mention of what kind he was. Was he swarthy? The only reason I mention this is because it might be part of their culture.

Re: Chivalry. Hello?!!
You should have yelled, "We don't do that kind of shit here in America Froto."
Are you sure you didn't offend this guy in any way CP? Maybe earlier on? Maybe you asked him earlier what's the nickname for those Brazilian nuts or something? Or he heard you doing your Team America impersonations?

Re: Chivalry. Hello?!!
LOL. Obviously dispicable. Sorry to hear about it CP. But it's so ironic--the young, fit serviceman stopping to wait for the pregnant lady to open a second door for him--that it's almost funny, in a Saturday Night Live skit sort of way. I hope you at least got a little laugh out of it.

Oh totally, I thought it was so odd and hilarious.
I know the second time I should have just let it slam on him, but I was just in shock.
Maybe I'll run into him again up there.

Re: Chivalry. Hello?!!
Hold on now. Let's give this guy the benefit of the doubt. We don't know what was going on his head. I mean, let's say it was DRTY and he was on his way to pirate party or something. I'd expect him to be knocking pregnant women and children out of the way to get there fast. Let's not be so judgemental.

OMG!!! LOL! Seriously, that whole scenario is disgusting. Who did he think he was? Entitled to having someone, let alone a pregnant woman, wait and hold the door open for him?? Yep, I would have yelled out, "You're WELCOME!!!" after he walked through the 2nd time. You'll probably see him around on the school campus again. Be ready for that rudeness again.
