Default Milage in Colorado

Im begining to think somthing is up with my H2. No matter how gentle i drive i cant get the MPG over 11. And trust me, i know how to drive gentle and get good mpg, i got my ford expedition up to 17 in NY...

The real thing that makes me wonder is, if i drive normal i get barley any improvement in MPG. Also, the engine is very loud (sounds like the clutch fan?) when accellerating, espically with the A/C on. Power also seems low. Worst on hot days.

Is this normal? I want input from colorado people since i know out here mpg is way down from what we would get out east.

I know when i got my H2 it was doing much better. And yea, i checked the air filter....its clean.

Any ideas guys?

My life-to-date mileage is exactly 12 mpg. In this thin air, the H2 is a bit underpowered. Any time you go up a slight incline it shifts down into 3rd, and often 2nd which winds the engine like crazy. I drive up I-70 to Evergreen almost every day and spend 1/2 of that time in 2nd gear at 4500 rpm. I've added a rack, winch, and 200 lbs of underbody protection. The more weight you put on it, the worse it gets. Adam's loaded rig probably hasn't seen 3rd gear in 12 months!

Are you running your A/C all or most of the time? That sound you are reffering to is your fan clutch, it comes on to bring down the engine temps, and will come on quite a bit more when the A/C is on. When the A/C and or fan clutch is on it will suck down a decent amount of power. Enough to make a noticable difference, and will knock your MPG too.

Actually, I found with my stock H2, running Breckenridge area, I got around 15 MPG no matter what. Here on the East coast, I have to be light on the pedal to get 12MPG. So I experienced a milage increase out there.

Were you going down the ski slopes when you were getting 15mpg?

John, does the roaring fan stop roaring at just above 2000rpm? i.e. is the fan clutch releasing or not? You can tell more easily when parked. Slowly increase throttle in park and see when it stops. If it's really noisy and you can't tell, you might need to lift the hood, stand on the rocker and watch it as you press the throttle and watch the RPMs.

Hey, I'm not lying! I thought the DIC was being evil, so I even calcuated using miles travelled and how much I put in the tank when I filled up. Maybe you Coloradonians have too much lead in your feet! I tested this mileage again when I returned to Colorado a few weeks ago. Same thing happened. I have a magical H2!

You know the fan doesnt seem to be releaseing at 2000 rpm...im going to go out now and check it out. Would definatly explain whats wrong, i have seen bad fun clutchs before, but usually they fail the other way and the vehicle overheats.

Talking Re: Milage in Colorado

13 to 14 mph here.. in Colorado. I mostly drive to and from work.. and I drive slow (let the beast work its way up to speed). This was with the DIC saying 14-15mph.. actual calculated 13 to 14. Then again.. I don't have any major hills in my path.. pretty straightaway and try to time the lights.

So the fan is that roar you hear as you pull away from a stop that is loud enough to drown out the exhaust and everything? I didnt know wtf that was.
During the day and when I first pull out of the driveway I hear it. Sometimes I can pull away slowly and hear the exhaust burbling, but when this fan goes on you cant hear anything but it and the truck feels weak.

Yes. It probably should drown out everything, but it is pretty loud.
