Big looks, small bucks: Cross Lander mixes Romanian design, Brazilian car building and American marketing. By BOB GRITZINGER (March 07, 2003)

SO YOU SAY YOU’RE hankering for an uncommon sport/utility vehicle, one that you won’t see every time you change lanes on the freeway. And as much as a $50,000 Hummer H2 or an $80,000 Range Rover might fit the bill, your pocketbook says you’re on more of a Chevy Tracker kind of budget.

May we suggest that you beat feet to the nearest of 70 dealers setting up shop across the United States to sell the Brazilian-built Cross Lander 244 4x4. List price for the Land Rover Defender look-alike with the Toyota Scion-like badging: $17,995.

“People look at it and think it’s the [Mercedes-Benz] G-Wagen,” says Mark Sampson, general sales manager at the Taylor Automotive dealership in Toledo, Ohio. Taylor Automotive plans to have the 2003 Cross Lander on sale by April or May.

The four-door Cross Lander is powered by a 2.8-liter, four-cylinder International Harvester turbodiesel that makes just 135 horsepower but cranks out 335 lb-ft of torque at 3800 rpm. The engine is linked to a five-speed manual transmission and a four-wheel-drive system with lock-out hubs. Options lean toward the utilitarian: brush guards, roof rails, winches and light bars.

“It’s like driving a little tank,” says Sampson.

Cross Lander’s debut will mark the culmination of efforts to bring the Romanian ARO 24 to the States. ARO began building 4x4 vehicles nearly 50 years ago. The vehicle is now being produced in Brazil, and some 12,000 per year will be shipped to the States via a Miami-based importer.

Sampson said if the Cross Lander 244 sells well, plans call for introducing a bigger model with a bubble roof this summer, followed by a four-door pickup in the fall and a flat-bed farm truck after that. Find out more at crosslander4x4.com.

They've been trying to bring the ARO to the USA for years. If you've ever seen one up-close, you'd understand the true meaning of junk.

ARO is Romanian for losing parts (above 45mph)!
