Police: Bucs' Pittman arrested for hitting wife's car with Hummer
Associated Press
PHOENIX - Tampa Bay Buccaneer running back Michael Pittman, who has a history of domestic violence, is facing felony charges after he rammed his Hummer into his wife's Mercedes in the upscale, gated community where they live, police said Sunday.
Phoenix police said Pittman, a star for the Buccaneers in the 2003 Super Bowl, was booked on six felony counts. He has since been released.
Pittman, 27, was arrested twice before for domestic violence in the summer of 2001. Following that, he was released by the Cardinals.
He also was arrested in 1997 in Fresno, Calif., when police said he held a former girlfriend by the neck and slammed her face into a car seat. He was sentenced to a batterers' treatment program and two years' probation.
On Saturday, Pittman was booked into the Madison Street Jail on three counts of aggravated assault and three counts of reckless endangerment.
Lt. Frank Milstead said Pittman rammed the car carrying his wife, Melissa, their son and his baby sitter as they tried to leave their gated community about 4 p.m.
No one was hurt in the crash, but the force of the crash pushed the Mercedes over a median and tore one of the tires from its rim.
Milstead said the argument was over whether Pittman could take the 2-year-old son to training camp.
"His wife was adamant that he should not take their son with him. He told her he paid for everything and told her to leave," Milstead said.
"She says, 'Hey, let's go back to the house and talk about it,'" Milstead said. "When she starts to move, he rams the car."
In the Bucs' 48-21 Super Bowl victory over Oakland last January, Pittman gained a game-high 124 yards on 29 carries.
Bucs spokesman Jeff Kamis said Sunday the team had no immediate comment.
"We are looking into the situation," he said.
