DRL Question?

What bulb is in the DRL's? I am looking to replace them with some Piaa super white bulbs to match the head lights but I don't have my H2 around to find out. Any help would be great.. ..C

The bulb in the DRL is a 4157. I am not sure that they make a PIAA that will work in there yet... I think that they are in the process of doing that.. That is what the guy at PIAA told me when I talked to him..

There are a couple of other threads on this. The bulb you will actually have to have is a 3157 as it is hard to find a 4157. BUT, the DRLs will not handle higher wattages. The stock bulbs are 27w and the housing will not handle anything higher. The best bet is to replace the whole DRL housing but as you read the other threads, this has not been a simple thing. I am going to order some Cibie Tangos in the clear fog pattern and replace the bulb with a PIAA Extreme White to match my HID headlights. From what I understand, the Tangos require only a small amount of modification to the plastic piece surrounding the stock DRL location.

I am looking, have been for some time, into some kind of stock replacements for the DRL's with a fog/driving light. The GMC Envoys are pretty close but expensive. Just the other day I scoped out the 2004 Jeep Cherokee Laredo fogs, they look really good, are about $89 each, but not in stock to look at, they won't order them unless I pay up-front, and I'd like to see the fixture first. Still looking.

Which bulb is in your DRLs depends upon when it was built. At some point, the bulb was changed from the 3157/4157 to a 4114K. This improved bulb also includes a different socket. I bought my H2 in March and it has the 4114k bulb. Page 5-57 of the manual shows this information.

I think that there were problems with degraded reflector quality with the 3157 bulb, but I am not positive that is why the change was made.

This is very interesting news - Should us that had earlier vehicles (Dec 2002) get retro-fit with better DRL lights - I will contract my dealer service rep to find out.

I have had mine since August and the reflector is melting and flaking with the stock bulbs, so I would think you made a very accurate assumption.

I think I found the perfect fixtures to replace our H2 DRL's.

Scooped out the 04 Jeep Cherokee Laredo in detail, great fit with a minor
mod/cut-out in the back of our H2 air dam. Part # 55156733AB, $88.70 (each),
at one dealer, $81.35 at another.

Then, just happened to drive by a Lincoln dealer and stopped to check out
the Navigator/Aviator. No!, for the Aviator, but the fixture for the 03
Navigator was nearly identical to the Jeep, and sells for $73.89, Part #
2L7Z-15200-AB, another dealer $70.37. I spent considerable time on my back
at a dealer checking it out...looks pretty promising. I ordered "one" to
make extra special sure the fit will be acceptable.

Both use the new 9145 H10 bulb based on the 9005/9006 platform. Neither
dealer could come up with the connector/wiring pigtail as it is part of the
entire vehicle wiring harness and therefore cost prohibitive. Hopefully it
won't be too hard to find the connector/pigtail.

Thanks everyone for all the help and info,I love this place! Looks like the inside of the light housing is flaking off. My H2 is only two months old! I will have the dealer change them first then I will play around with the bulb replacement. Might even replace them with new lights all together. I will let everyone know how it came out. C

My H2 is only two months old and it has the new bulbs... Are the bulbs in your DRLs the old style 3157/4157 bulbs or the "new/improved" 4114k bulbs?

The reflectors in my DRLs look as good as new...

I would imagine that if the dealer replaces the faulty reflectors they would also switch the bulb and socket to the newer style ???

I have my DRLs "fixed" so they stay on with the headlights... so they are definitely being used.

I emailed SMA to get a rubber isolator for my spare tire carrier (most recent models have the isolator attached) and also asked about them coming out with an option of replacing the stock DRL's. Apparently, it will be some Piaa fogs built into a housing that will replace the whole plastic "bumperette" where the stock DRL's are. Someone in one of the other threads brought this up, but I got an answer direct from SMA. I'll post as soon as they come out and I get them ordered and installed. They are supposed to be available some time in July.

I replaced mine with a xenon like 3157 bulb and they are working great. I have posted pics in the lighting forum for all to see...

I bought these and they are awesome (http://www.hummersolutions.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HSC&Product_Cod e=HSC-0305-CIFCLR&Category_Code=L100). I decided not to screw around with those stupid and useless plastic DRLs.

They're a little bit of work to put in but they are brighter than my PIAA 520s on my brush guard. I was going to try the replace bulb thing until I read about the melting problems people were experiencing.

The 03 Lincoln Navigator fog lamps are the way to go. They have a 45W, 9145 Bulb, and fit into out air dam with little effort (small rectangular cut-out for the fixture vertical adjustor, and 3 holes for the mounting bolts. I will hook them up to the existing DRL wiring initially, then maybe rewire/switch/relay eventually. Very simple install. When my second fixture is in I will post some pics. Cost is $70.37 plus tax Approx. $75 each fixture. There is a website that can save about $10, minus shipping costs. I just got mine from a local dealer....they will deal on the price sometimes, especially if you have 2 dealers competing.

Nope, the new ones are not installed yet, sorry if I was misleading. I will install the new fogs next week. I will switch them so they can be turned off and on. My DRL's presently are jumped with the parking light relay so they can be used at night as well as during the day. I, even now, only run the DRL's when the sun is not out/at night. I will run the new fogs only at night/in the fog.

No, no longer Day Time Lights. You can use them anytime you want (as it should be). The kit they sold me has a cool looking switch (actually they give you two switches with the kit for optional installations and the relay, wires, drill bit, and even the allen wrench to unscrew your dash to install the switch). I was impressed. It is a little work to install them, but well worth it.

I can appreciate Hum2's thoughts on the Navigator lights, but in all fairness, a 45watt factory light is nothing like the Cibie H3 off-road lamps I installed. These are off-road lamps that are used in European off-road events and can be used day or night.

It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish I guess. If you just want brighter DRLs during the day, then switch the bulb to something that won't burn the plastic lens or spend $150 or so to use the Navigator lights.

I was looking for a full on off-road lamp that didn't change the DRL socket look and could control them when I want to use them.

I just bought a Gobi rack from them too and expect to have (4) Piaa's on the rack and (2) on my grill plus the Cibie's. That should be enough light to be annoying.
