Sound coming from the front end???
My 3 recently started having a creaking noise in the front end when you turn left or right. Hard to explain but its loud. You can feel it in the floor board and is on both sides. When driving straight it does not do it. It is really bad when turning and hitting a bump or something. It keeps getting louder and I cant find where its coming from. Any ideas guys. I thought it was because the weather is getting colder here in nc...Any comment....

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
Check the body mounts. I heard similar noises/clunks in my 07 when turning and turns out the left front body mount wasn't torqued right at the factory. The e-brake cable was also wedged between the body and frame, which was part of the problem. I was at a loss, but the dealer found it and fixed it right up ... no more noises

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
I have the same thing. does it sound like metal bending and then popping back. I was thinking it was the torsion bars working or something, but people keep mentioning body mounts and I think that may be it.

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
Sounds like what I have....whenever I turn left I have this. Dealer has looked and looked and can never hear it, why am I not surprised. It sounds to me like as if something is stuck in the tire and rubbing like a branch. :-(

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
I am sooo glad to see that I am not the only one with this problem! I have not had many problems with my 3 but this is one that started about a month or so ago and it is getting worse. Took it in the the dealer to get it checked out but while driving it home the sound was still there when I would make a turn (seems like I hear & feel the popping/grinding noise most when I make right hand turns). Anyway, the service guy said that he could hear it but never could figure out the problem...just said that he tightened the torsion something or another???. Got a call the other day from the dealer to ask how everthing went with the service and I told the lady that the problem is still there and that I am getting pretty worried about it now since it seems to be getting worse...she told me she would send me a free oil change card & tell the service guys & that hopefully they can get it fixed right the next time I come in (the dealer is in Lubbock which is about 2 hours from my house).
I can feel a grinding then a popping under the driver side floorboard and can hear it loudly...seems to be worse when its cold...but it was not there until about 2 months ago. Going to try and make it back to the dealer next week to have it looked at again...keep your fingers crossed for me!

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
I know this sounds crazy, but mine was making a similar noice and it ended up being the left upfront rubber grommet that the hood sits on.. I just turned it down two turns and the noice went away.. I heard the noice when I would turn at low speeds and when going over bumps.... It was driving me nuts... Sounded like something was crackling in the suspension..

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
I have had a similar issue. Sometimes there would be (and still is as the issue isn't resolved) a popping noise coming from the steering column, but sounded like it was under the hood rather than in the truck. It was especially noticeable when turning at slow speeds, and going over any sort of uneven surface made it only that much worse. In warmer weather it's really apparent, especially in slower city-driving conditions.
The techs at Sewell here in Dallas have shown me the problem, and have tried to fix it by, on one visit by replacing the upper intermediate steering shaft, and once by rotating and tightening the bolt that connect the upper and lower shafts.
What I'm hearing is the shaft flexing and popping under stress. After the second visit to the service dept. I thought things were fixed for good. But, the noise has just come back now...a little over a month later.
I watched the tech reach up under the hood and grab on the upper and lower shaft to show me how any stress on it made the popping noise.
I told him thanks for recreating it...now make it go away.
So I'm about to take it in again, as soon as I have some time.
Anyway, this could be what you're hearing.

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
Mine has been in the shop for the third time for this same problem. They have called GM in Detroit and they are saying it is characteristic of the H3 to do this. Certain driving conditions make it happen. I am not real happy with that but from what it sounds like it's doing it on most of the H3.

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
It sounds like it might be a torsion bar problem. I work for MBZ and the ML's have the same problem. There is a plastic bushing that supports the torsion bar keys. When the plastic cracks, it makes the same type of noise. I dont know if GM torsions are built the same way but it might be something to look into.

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
Open the hood look at the firewall. There are some long skinny steel black tubes (I am not sure what they are for) they run the length of the firewall.
They are not far down almost at the top. These tubes are put in on little plastic cheesy mounts. They can easily pop out and luckily easily pop back in. Because of their location they sound horrible when you hit bumps (if loose). Check these out and make sure they are secure.

those tubes are the brake lines. carefull with them! i had the little pipe pop out of one of its claps and was making a rattling noise, easy to pop back in, but be careful not to bent the line, its not strong.

I have the same noise but notice it more when it is very cold. I just had an H3 for a rental and it made the same noise.

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
Well, I have not been back to the dealership in Lubbock to have my little "problem" fixed yet ( I know, I know...PROCRASTINATOR). The sound and the popping/grinding is still there...I have noticed more now than before that it happens while turning in either direction and ONLY when I am taking a corner kinda fast and the body rolls/leans from the turn...so maybe this is a problem with the body mounts as someone mentioned above? Someone above mentioned that it sounds like metal bending then popping back...that is the best description of my problem.
ANYWAY, it is still driving me crazy!!!
MY plan is to take the trip to Lubbock next Friday...I hope they can figure it out this time (gunna print out the above mentioned ideas and take it with me for the service guy to read...hopefully he will FIX IT this time!

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
I got mine back the other day from having this worked on. This dealer was not familiar with the problem, but my old dealer was. The old dealer said it was a body mount. This is what the dealer I took it to came up with. I still feel a little something but not on turns, and I didn' feel it in the 2007 loaner I had for the 10 days mine was in the shop(laundry list of things wrong)

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
I hear a sound also. Pulled into my drive and left the engine running, popped the hood and discovered what the noise was...

Sorry KMA, I couldn't resist bringing your typo to the forefront.
I have the same noise up front when making a u-turn and turning the wheel sharp all the way to the left or right. The front wheels almost make a 'hop' until I straighten them out. It looks like many on the forum have a similar problem.

Same as the H2.
They told me for weeks it was because of my undercage being bent up into my exhaust. I removed it, but the sound was still there.
It took them another few weeks to realize that it was the body mounts.
I gave the ones Timgco found behind me on Golden Crack in Moab. " Hey Dennis, I think this fell off your rig. WTF is it?"
Check your body mounts up front. Gewd ruck.
