Yesterday I pulled up behind a car parked in front of a building. While I went in to pick up a key a guy making a food delivery in a small old honda civic pulled up behind me. It was puring rain and dark. The honda pulled up a little close to my bumper and had no lights on.
Long story short > I did not notice his car when I got in mine to leave > and so I had to back up to clear the car in front of me. I looked in the mirror and saw nothing. But reverse hit something > my 5th wheel and rear recovery hook left two nice big dents in the top of his hood > Ouch $250.00 we settled it right their, No damage or scratches to My H3. You cant see low cars at all behind you if they are close so be careful. I usaly open my driver door when paralel parking backing up.

Install some back up sensors. I did it and it was way cheaper than 250 USD...

Try some of those blind spot mirrors. They won't see everything but may assist.

I found rectangular blind spot mirrors at pep boys put them on the outer bottom of mirror they fit nice and you can see better .They were ones that are suposed to be mounted to the mirror arm for a chevy .

Don't feel bad. I almost hit a Toyota the other day. Specially when my back window is tinted (limo tint). Alot of privacy = 0 visibility.
I also installed those rectangular spot mirrors and they help, but to solve this incovenience I am installing a back up camera like my Lexus Rx330 or my F250 truck.

These H3's have very poor visibility at the rear, especially since the butt is so high compared to the front of the truck. I have an easier time parking my Yukon XL!

I'm going to get a stick-on fresnel lens for stick the rear window. It will act like a fish-eye and let me see below window level. Lots of RVs have them. From what friends have experienced with back-up sensors, I don't know that I'd rely on 'em.

A fresnel lens is a thin lens that uses a grooves in the surface rather than a curved surface to magnify or reduce images. One side is usually clear, the other covered with small grooves to suit the desired image.

They're used a lot in lighting (pre-LED traffic lights use them) and photo processing equipment. They will make a point of light fill a large area evenly. On a flat window, one will produce a fish-eye effect of almost 180 degrees view, though distorted. As I said, you often will see them stuck on the rear window of RVs. I've seen them sold in auto supply stores.
