What can be done to better the MPG for the H3?
I've had my H3 for ~ a month now and as of now I have spent close to $400 this month on gas. I was wondering what can be done to better the MPG I get from the Hummer.

Re: What can be done to better the MPG for the H3?
filling up twice a week... you must do a lot of miles!!!
in my H2 which is getting less MPG than you, I fill up once a week... about $80 and that gets me about 350 miles

Try getting a better job, then you'll be able to afford the f'n gas.
Sorry for the negative attitude everybody, but this is really stupid.

Trade it in on a Prius or other hybrid.

I am so poor, I can't even afford to pay my tuition fees. My last fill up only got me 200 miles. I think I'm gonna go back to stock form, and remove all the doors, spare tire, hood, roof, skid plate .....etc.

$400/month for gas? Just stop driving so much. And get a job closer to home or move closer to your job.

Re: What can be done to better the MPG for the H3?
I also spend about $400 / month on gas. While it has less financial impact on me than the original poster, I would love to get better gas mileage if at all possible. I think you guys are being a little rough on him. Yes, we all knew (or should have known) that good gas mileage is not one of the selling points of our H3 (or any other real SUV), but that doesn't mean that if there was a way to get better MPGs, that I would not jump at the chance.
Typically, driving less is not an option, as most of us who use the H3 as a daily driver have no control over the distance to work or school. What could possible help this gentlemen is the following, if they are at all even applicable. These are just some thoughts off the top of my head while I am enjoying my morning coffee, and are no means a complete list, nor are they specific to the H3.
1. less aggressive driving. Keep speeds under 75 on the highway, avoid jack rabbit starts, etc.
2. avoid getting stuck in rush hour traffic. In my case, leaving the house at 06:30 means a half hour ride to my clients office, vs. leaving at 06:45, where it will take me 45 minutes. Same thing with going home in the afternoon. departing at 16:00 sharp means a 30 minute ride, where as 16:15 takes at least 45 minutes.
3. Keep tires properly inflated, and rotate and balance every 5K miles.
4. Keep all filters clean, and change as necessary.

Trade it in on a Prius or
put more air in your tires and slow down.
just remeber you are probably not going to get 19-20 around town only on the hwy

Right, it's a freeking Hummer, not a Prius/Corolla/Civic/Scion/Focus, etc.

Re: What can be done to better the MPG for the H3?
boo hoo man what were you thinkin, ok here is the standard sales answer. Buy a free flow exhaust and air intake. better breathing means better MPG.
Synth oil on the next change.
Reality, not the right vehicle for that many miles and slow down.
I do $250 a month

Re: What can be done to better the MPG for the H3?
So what's your MPG anyway?
I don't believe in tricks, gizmos or gimmicks. IMHO, your best bet is a light foot, good tire pressure and regular maintenance (engine, tranny, xfer, diff oil changes).
I do believe in synthetic oil and lightening your load (don't carry gear you don't need). Don't buy gas with ethanol unless you have too (less energy per gallon). Turn the engine off when idling in parking lots or at train crossings. Get a 2nd set of wheels with good street tires. Some say a good cat-back exhaust helps.

Motorists turning to nitrogen to save gas
It?s not just for NASCAR as ordinary drivers fill tires for better mileage

x2. You own a hummer, shuthefukup! I'm moving, my commute is going from 9 miles to 30 miles (1 way). My gas bill will go up by $150-200 per month just for my commute (not to mention, the nearest grocery store will be 20 miles from my new house). Am I bitching? NO, because it's my choice and if I whine about it, I'm just whining about my own choices.
Here's what you should do to improve your gas mileage:
- Bigger tires. By covering more distance with each revolution, you will go further for each rotation of the engine, thereby using less gas to go the same distance.
- Use your headlights at all times. Studies show that, by using your headlights instead of your daytime running lights, you will actually lower your fuel consumption (because DRLs use so much energy).
- Get a roof rack. The actually helps 'streamline' the boxy nature of the H3. A roof rack distills the air above the Hummer, creating a lower pressure above the vehicle (much like an airplane wing). This 'lift' generated by the effect of the roof rack reduces the rolling coefficient of friction of the tires, increasing gas mileage.
- Use the 'Tornado' intake vortex thingymagger on your exhaust. A little known fact is that the exhaust flows too smoothly out of the engine. This lack of backpressure inhibits the ability of the engine to correctly generate compression. By creating a vortex in the exhaust gases, it increases backpressure, improving your gas mileage.
I hope these ideas help you improve your gas mileage. I'm sure other much more experienced people here can provide other ideas as well.
