Sad Hummer Story today in So Ca.
Sitting in the hotel here this evening a news story comes on about:
"Man runs over and kills his 19 month old son with his hummer". That alone is depressing because most of us with these cars are men, most likely have families. AND..... I know my little guy is23 months old, loves cars, and will stare at the cars in the driveway cuz he wants nothing more to go sit and play in them. Well, he sees dada leaving for a business trip again, and could very likely run outside to say by one more time, or sneak a ride in.
So where the tear left my eye was when i realized that could have been any of our suns...............and it all happened for a good intention, Little Guy was rushing to his daddy before he left again!! :-(
This dad must be devastasted inside.!!!
And the sad case of the news industry that the brand name of the car was what people will remember of the event, If the same story happend and the guy was driving a Ford Explorer, the headline would have been very differet...... "girl run over by man driving SUV"

Re: Sad Hummer Story today in So Ca.
I'm a lot older and have 3 grandkids 3, 5 & 7. One of my fears is just what you described. I have a reminder on my dash that I see every time I sit behind the steering wheel that causes me to pause and check. I notice in neighborhoods with lots of kids, they are very curious and in one case ran out in the road to look at mine while his grandma sat in a chair on the porch helpless. Awareness is the key to safe and fun driving. My heart and prayers like yours, go out to this dad.

We've got a neighborhood full of kids so I've gotten in the habit of doing a quick walk-around everytime I back out of the drive for this very reason.
The back-up visibility from the driver's seat is pretty much non-existant for anything down low, be careful.

Re: Sad Hummer Story today in So Ca.
That is VERY scary. I have a 23 mo old also who has been opening doors since he was 14 mos old. With a new house that isn't 100% toddler proof, we've quickly learned that you can't take your eyes off them for one second- or "assume" that someone else is watching them. You have to be overprotective, or something like that could easily happen.
I agree on the SUV thing again, but I have to say that my H2 has some of the worst blind spots ever. And of course getting the lift didn't help. Our dogs run loose on the property, and I usually can't see them. I just keep my fingers crossed that they're smart enough to get out of my way when I'm driving. With a kid under 3' high, yeah, there's no way I'd see him.

Sad. One reason I use a Hitchcam on my H3.

That just put a streak of pain through my chest. Very sad news. I've always had that fear when the boys are outside playing.

X2. ALthough some people think back up cams are a waist of money, it's a small price to pay considering what can happen.
VERY SAD!

Re: Sad Hummer Story today in So Ca.
Very sad indeed. I can't imagine my little girl being hurt. It breaks my heart to hear things like this. I am an ICU nurse and when we have kids that come in, it always reminds me that this too could happen to my daughter and my family. Guys, PLEASE take the extra min to review your surrondings and never leave without saying "I love you". .................................... Jamie

That's too bad. This is why those back up cameras come in handy I guess.

Re: Sad Hummer Story today in So Ca.
My back up cam helps but the sucker is a big rolling blindspot. My son is just 3, LOVES cars and has been really good about being careful around them. His Mom has made him a little paranoid. Which is okay.
