Okay, in about an hour, I'm going to my shop and going to install the 4.56 ring and pinions I've been carrying around for the last week.
Wish me luck...
PS. Thanks to ya'll with the Hotshot windshield washer idea... it works great.

Okay, 12 hours later, I'm still not done. That thing fought me every step of the way. What could go wrong, did.
Now that the backlash and wear pattern have been set, I installed the crush cone and what happens??? They sent me the wrong freakin' pinion seal.
Well, gonna try to finish tomorrow... jesus, if I knew it was gonna take this long, I wouldn't have started this today.

Mark that sucks.
It always happens like that though doesn't it? Did you get a friend to help or were you exlporing the planet alone?

I started the journey alone but halfway through the day a friend of mine who is a GM tech came over and helped.
It would have been easier had I been at his dealership. I would have had a better press, a better dial indicator, etc, etc... I probably wasted 3 hours trying to get things in order.
I called a local parts store and they said they had the correct seal in stock. They're open 24 hours (yes, in a row) so early tomorrow I'll chase the seal down.
Hopefully I can get this whole things done tomorrow. So much for going riding tomorrow.

Oohhhh, I'm done alright... whew, what a FREAKIN' pain. ****, there was so much grease everywhere, I would have never attempted to even hold a camera...lol.
Well, there's a definitely a difference but apparently according to my calculations, I was wrong about the gears bringing my speedo back in sync. Instead of being off a couple mph, now my speedo reads approx. 10mph faster than what I'm really doing.
Guess I'm going to be ordering the computer programmer next.

How much money did you save doing it yourself?

It wasn't a money issue at all. It was an impatient problem. I painted some stuff for a GM tech that does nothing but drivetrain. He was going to install the gears Saturday. I got a phone call that he was feeling sick and wanted to do it next Saturday. The problem is I'm getting my Nav installed next Saturday...
So, though it took me twice as long, at least it's done.
As far as money, I had called one place and they told me it would cost 600-1000 to install.

You did save yourself quite a bundle then, plus you also have the satisfaction that the job was done right.

Without sounding anal, you're right, I find that half the time if I want it done right, I simply have to do it myself.

Well, actually I'm not sure now. The speedometer seems off but going down the highway, the odometer is almost perfect. Doesn't it make sense if the odometer is correct, the speedometer should also be correct?
Regardless, when the Superchips tuner comes, it'll be alright.

PS. The gears were worth every penny. The power difference is phenomonal. I don't mean it's a race car, it just brings the rpms, shift points and the constant shifting somewhat back to normal. I can't wait to see how it runs with the Volant, Superchips and exhaust.

What size and brand of tire/rims are you running? Do you have a charger? I've been very interested in a lift and larger tires but just don't want to loose the take off. What brand of ring and pinion did you go with? Congrats on the install.

I went with the Mazzi Hulks in 20's. The tires were Toyo Open Country 38-15.5/20's. I recently sold a Yukon with 12" of lift and 36's. I had 4.56 gears in it also.
Point is, the 6.0 would run circles around my Yukon so I was hoping that the bigger tires (though they are 38's, they really measure 36.5") wouldn't affect it that much.
Unfortunately I was wrong. The 140 lb. a piece tires is too much drag on the engine. That's alot of rotating mass. The truck was having problems maintaining 70mph on any kind of incline. It was constanting shifting and my gas mileage went down to around 9 mpg.
With the 4.56's, I'm back to 10-11 mpg and the transmission isn't searching contantly. I'm holding off on the supercharger right now but I did order the Volant air intake, Superchip and Magnaflow catback. Hopefully, all these will at least make a noticeable difference.
BTW, I bought YUKON gears. I bought both front and rear ring and pinions, two minor install kits and pinion bearings for less than 700 bucks.
They fit well, they didn't take but one 9mm shim for backlash.

How about a pick from the front or rear showing how far the tires stick out? Are you getting the E&G flares?
