Default 37x13.5's on factory 17's?

I know some of you have done it! Anyone have photos?

I need new tires soon and am pretty hell bent on the 37x13.5 toyo MT's but I'm have a hard time deciding if I should get them on a second set of 18" rockstars or mounting them on my factory wheels. They are only going to be used for winter use and any moderate off roading I'll be doing, its hard to justify another set of wheels I'm going to beat on. On the other hand, I've come to love the stance I get from the backspacing on my mazzi's and would hate to go back to the narrow looking stockers.

I gave a few minuets of thought to spacers but that seems a little like half ass'in? I found the tires for $1500-1600 or tires on 18" rockstars for $2000, so the price isn't much of a difference... On the other hand, If I used the stock wheels I could use the money I saved for some rubberduck rock rims

I can't answer the wheel issue, but I would coment that MT tires are a really poor choice for winter driving. A good AT tire will outdo a MT tire on snowy icy roads hands down. You can sipe an MT and it will be better, but still not as good even as an AT. However, if you sipe the MT it will chunk out if you use them off road. Just be aware that the MT will not be great on snow and ice. The exception would be offroad snow, i.e. really deep snow.

JMHO after many years in the tire business and see lots of tires first hand.

I have heard this, about every MT tire. Up until this truck I've ran BFG AT's every winter since I started driving, its a great tire but it still has a fair amount of slippage on hard pack and ice (edit: and they suck pretty hard in deep snow). I really like the look of the Goodyear duratrac's but they don't make them in a 37, I'm running Toyo AT's currently and am pretty amazed at how quiet they are for an AT tire although I wonder how well they really handle on ice as they seem pretty hard.

I do snow removal in the winter and have a rotating shift job at a hospital so I often find myself driving in the middle of the nastiest weather we get up here, I figured a MT would be better in deep snow and the weight of the 2 would maybe compensate for some sliding..

I ran 37x13.50 Toyos and they wore down so fast. They were quiet, handled well but for the money you want them to last. I now run 37x13.50x22 Nitto Mud Grapplers on my H2 and they are definitely louder on the street but are wearing alot slower. I have driven in the snow with them and they handle well. I have no complaints except they are alittle loud.
On my H3 we put Mickey Thompson MTZ tires. I was pleasantly surprised, they are quiet, and handle great. They performed real well in soft sand and mud and I might buy them for the H2 in the future. I havent used them in the snow yet but I am sure they will do good.
I just strongly suggest that if you are going to spend the money on Mud tires make sure you rotate them alot so they wear even. I personally think Toyos are overpriced and wear way to fast. I will never buy Toyos again

I've always liked MT tires since I was a kid and my neighbor converted a F150 lightning to 4WD with a 12" lift at 37" baja claws. Anything I've ever looked at online as far as pricing has been pretty steep though... Never heard anything bad about the tires though. The MTZ's look like they have a fair amount of factory siping for a MT tire too?

Humeron, is there a substantial difference between Toyo and Nitto ? I am on my second set of Toyo MT's and they have already wore down 1/4 inch on the fronts in less than 3,000 miles. I guess the heat and towing doesnt go well with these tires....

TS,

Is your truck lifted or have some leveling in it?

Can you get 13.5s on a leveled truck...or does it need to be lifted?

It is lifted about 3 1/2 " I put the "green" keys up front and 2" spring spacers in back with Skyjacker shocks all around.

How's the wear on those Toyos? My stock BFG ATs got about 62,000 (with tread left)...but the BFG MTs that I replaced them with are nearly wore half way down with only 14,000 on them. I was planning on going back to AT before winter, but really like the more aggressive look of MT tires.

I'm pretty torn still, the tires look good on the factory rims but I've really grown attached to the look of my wider, offset wheels. I'm having a bunch of work done tomorrow so I'll make sure to post a picture once I get the truck leveled out. I'd love to have a set of hutchinson beadlocks wheels on there but I know I could never afford them :P

Ya tsdrummerboy,

How is the wear on those? Also, what mileage difference did you notice when you went up the 2 inches in tire size?

Are you running a chip or power pack kit or anything?

And lastly - Great looking rig!!!

My mileage dropped from 11.8 to 10.2 when I went up to 37s, but then I slapped on a Flowmaster exhaust and changed the gears to 4.56s; that put me right back at 11.6. Oh, and I'm running the "performance" tune from a Superchips Cortex.

The Superchips Cortex 2950 was a little under $400 and the exhaust was a little over $400.

I traded my stock tires for the toyo`s with 1/2 the tread life on them back in May of this year and I haven`t noticed any wear to date.Mileage....I`m getting around 11.5 mpg with a Diablo predator tunable performance programmer.

There is a seller on ebay with the 37x13.5 toyo's or nittos for just under $1700, or on 18" black rockstars for $2000, 20" for $2200. I thought those wheels cost a little more than that but apparently not huh. The price isn't far off, I've usually seen new online for just under $400 per tire. I just don't get hard for those stock wheels though
