Okay, so sad Saturday morning. Hubby was changing the oil(@ 12,000miles) and noticed that my front left CV shaft is leaking!?!
Anyone else?
This can't be good?

I have to assume you mean the CV joint, or else I would have to ask where is the CV shaft
If it was the axle shaft, then I would have to ask where, at the CV joint (outer boot) or the tri-pod joint (inner boot)?
If at a boot, is it ripped or is the fluid leaking out of one of the boots, where the clamps are? (Inside the boots are grease.) Is it leaking where the shaft goes into the differential? If leaking out of the differential, it will be a fluid with less viscosity than out of the boots.
I would suggest a trip to the dealer, if a boot is ripped, dirt will get inside and tear up the joints. If just leaking past a boot clamp or from the diff case, it is still not good, but at least it is not likely any dirt will get in and tear up the joint or the diff gears.
Now if it is just a very thin layer of fluid on the boot, and there are no rips, or it does not appear to be coming out of the boot or the diff, then it might be something your drove through and splashed up on the boot.
The important thing is if it is a ripped boot, that was ripped from off-roading, it may not be covered under warranty, and replacement of the boot is a lot less expensive than replacement of the entire CV or Tri-pod assembly, or entire shaft. If you have not off-roaded, and the boot has been ripped, get it to a dealer ASAP. Sometimes, when the clamps are installed on the ends of the boot, where they clamp to the shaft, the boot can get cut, causing a small amount of grease to exit; especially as the joint heats up.

wELL IF YOU'D STOP DRIVING IT SO HARD, IT WOULDN'T BE LEAKING!
J/k...Take it to the dealer either way. Wheather the boot is torn, or if it's leaking from the clamp areas, save yourself alot of front drivetrain issues, and let them do the work. 'Cause if you let someone else do the work, the dealership will say that it was done incorrectly, if something else happens to the front drivetrain later down the road!!!

Hello HiHummer,
My driver side Output Shaft seal also went out. It didn't take the dealer no time to put a new one in, but it was a special order item, so I had to wait a couple of days to bring it back in. They said hardly any gear oil leaked out, but they topped it off for me. They also said that mine was the only one in the Houston area that had an axle seal go out, so its not that common. Its a real simple procedure, so it shouldn't be a problem. But hurry up and bring it in so you can make sure not too much oil has leaked out!

I took it in this morning and they said, of course, that the axel seal is leaking. They are ordering the part from Michigan.
As for Mr.HI...I think I need an upgrade.

The black on the buttons was flaking off. A common problem I believe. They did replace it though.
