I'm not a mechanic or anything, but my 2003 H2 is having a sqeaky sound? It sounds to be a belt??? And, is that something that can be fixed with belt spray or does it have to be replaced totally?

probably will go away with belt dressing, but if it does not, or comes back shortly, then the serpentine belt should be replaced

try this be VERY carefull!!! start motor and use a wire brush to clean the belt inside and out, inspect for cracks and replace if any.

Now heres the thing - I had a belt noise that I couldn't get rid of. It ended up being not a belt noise at all. some loose engine cover that squeeked and sound just like a belt. can;t tell you where it is because dealership fixed it.

Just go to any auto parts store and pick up a new belt for peace of mind. They're easy to change. Just make sure you follow the belt routing directions on the front, passenger side of the radiator mount.

if I change the belt.. and you say it's pretty easy, when I loosen up the pulleys and such to get the belt loose, does the nut on the pulley need to bet tighten with a torque wrench at all? Or, just tighten it as hard as you can???

There is a 'tension' pulley that keeps the belt tight. You do not need to unbolt anything.. just use a 3/8" socket wrench and insert into the square hole on the belt tensioner and swing away from the belt...this will have tension on it and you must be careful to not allow this to swing out of your hand.

Remove the existing belt while tension is off the belt and then install the new belt... allow the tension to go back against the new belt.

This proceedure is easier if you have help holding the tension off the belt.

Keep your old belt somewhere in your vehicle for a spare in the event you ever break the new belt.

hope this helps

What Dewi said is correct. Just be sure to follow the diagram for putting the belt back on.

okay.. it turns out it wasn't the serpintine belt. It was the one under it that was making all of the noise. The a/c belt. I ended up changing both belts, and no more squeakes. The a/c belt had a bunch of cracks on it. Thanks for everyones help!!! you guys ROCK!!

I had a squeaky serpentine belt a couple of years ago. I used belt dressing stuff and that made it worse, as well as got all over the place. The mechanic used a stethescope type thing to listen and thought the noise was coming from some bearings or whatnot. Eventually, about an hour and a half later, he kinda got this look on his face, walked over to his work bench and grabbed a water bottle. Poured some water on the belt while it was running, and the squeaking stopped for about a minute. Did it again, and it stopped again. So, we ran to NAPA and picked up a new belt and problem solved. He was pissed that he didn't try the water first...would've saved a lot of time.

Apparently, he said that sometimes mechanics will get antifreeze or something on the belt that causes it to squeak like that. The water test works most of the time to ddx the problem....

Just a heads-up, my a/c compressor went out at the end of last year. Squealed like crazy when I stepped on the gas. Drove it straight to the dealer and let them hear it. It sounded like the belt, but they replaced the whole compressor.

well, ever since I changed the belt.. there's been no mice squeeling anymore. I just checked the ac to make sure everything worked, and it did with no mice. But, good thing to keep in mind... thanks.
