broken Tie rod causes Front Diff housing failure?
Well, looks like my tie rod broke and the tire turned inward pulling the axle and breaking the front diff housing?
Has anyone ever heard of this, or is it even possible for the tire to turn that far, considering the front sway bar should act as a stop.
Now I am being told that this is not a mechanical failure and should fall under my auto insurance?
Am I crazy or does this sound like BS?
ps Still hoping the dealership can help!!

How did you get it back up to the top of the hill, was it the rock buggies?

Re: broken Tie rod causes Front Diff housing failure?
Just got word, GM will not cover front diff!
They claim front end hopping caused diff failure after tierod breakage. Of course they weren't there. Don't seem to care what I have to say.
Is there an appeal process with GM?

I've got one with 20K miles on it. I bought it when I blew mine out but never used it.
It came out of an '04 or '05, I don't remember.
400 plus shipping.

you can try Schram's Auto.
800-462-9292 ext 225 for their store in Waterford, MI
800-292-1032 ext 2140 for Mason Mi
they will likely have a H2 front diff with little to no miles on it...

Great thanks. GM is going to put a new one in, someday. However for 400, a used one not a bad choice.
Crush do you have the housing as well?

found out today GM has authorized a warranty rent car for 60 days. Don't guess they are planning to end the strike very soon.

FAWK!!!!! 60 days? Glad to hear they are covering it. ISn;t there a law that states if your vehicle is in the shop for x amount of days vs days of ownership, they have to replace it. I thin k it is a sub law of the lemon law. I know you haven;t had this truck very long....maybe something to look into.

Sorry, didn't get an email notice that anyone responded. My apologies.
Yes, it's the entire housing. I can take a pic for you if you want.
Let me know.

Re: broken Tie rod causes Front Diff housing failure?
Texas lemon law is wierd. It has to have the same problem 3 times and be in the shop for more than 30days in the first year only. After the first year your screwed. Only had this one 3 months, but first problem, and after talking with the service guys may be as much my fault. Of course if GM would wake up and use heavier tierods we would not be having this conversation..
On the lighter side, I have new Fabtech tierods and a eaton front locker being installed at the same time the diff is replaced.

I just checked this post tonight. For some reason, I'm not getting subscription notification.
I'll post pics tomorrow when I get to work.

Something tells me this is just what they want you to think. There is generally always a weak link and by beefing up the tie rods you just transfer the weak link.

Re: broken Tie rod causes Front Diff housing failure?
Next weak link is the center link pitarm and idler arm. If any of those had broken I would not have broke the front diff housing.
Second having a weak link and having a grossly weak link are different. Those 3/8" tierods break on every trip. (my first time). There is no way that tierod should be on a 6800 lb truck

The problem is AAM is on strike so there are no parts being produced.
