I was looking at new wheels this week and found some Moto Metal 950 that I really like.
I love the low-profile look of 35's on 20" rims, but know that it would not provide enough sidewall protection and strength after airing down when doing serious offroading.
But, I was wondering how 37" tires on 20" rims would perform. I saw a set on another H2 and they looked like they'd have better sidewall protection.
Am I asking for trouble with this setup, or shoud I stick to a smaller setup like 18" rims with 35" tires..?

ROX, I would go with 18's and 35's. I know a couple people that are running this setup and love it for off roading. If you only did moderate off roading, i would say the 20's and 37's would be fine, but I've seen what you do!  And have heard what your other half does with that truck!  18" set up will be cheaper and lighter also.

phild i like the way you broke that down nice post. on that note i love thoes rims and wanted them in a 24 but they dont make. IMO the 20s on a 37 would look best, and according to phil you loose no performance.

I think I knew the answer deep down, but I had to ask again anyway. The 35 on 18 would probably be best for me because I tow my trailer all over the West, and because I never know when I'll take off to "see where the road goes."
However, I now know if I choose the 37 on 20's I won't be giving up any sidewall depth.
Ken: TacoBell = Pwned! He doesn't need new tires and wheels for that...
I remember you had 18's, but wasn't sure how you liked them in the Moab environment. Sometimes I get lucky and find a road like Kane Creek that I have to pound on to get through.

You may want to reread what Phil wrote.
If you do a lot of highway miles, then 37's will decrease your performance slightly and reprogramming may be worthwhile in that case."
I've got 38's on my 20's and am so disgusted with highway speeds of 70-80'ish that I'll be adding a supercharger soon. I've already installed 4.56 gears and did the reprogramming and though it helped, I'm not happy with it.
Just a thought.

I dont think the 35's on a 20in rim give a low profile look. I park as close to the curb as i can so i frequently rub on the curbs and never have any fear of dinging up my rims. I believe Phil when he says the 37 on a 20in rim with give you protection, but for the little wheeling i do i feel confident in my tire/rim combo.

I'm not much of a seat of your pants performance guy, I'm more into dyno numbers and/or track times....
That said, I can tell you that a programmer will be noticeable. No, it won't smoke the tires, no, you can't catch 2nd gear...lol but the shifting will be crisper, the performance will be noticeable.
If I put the supercharger on soon, I'll be selling my month or so old Superchips programmer.

hi Rox. yes the programmers wake the truck up! I have had Hypetech III's on my last four trucks! I love them and ca't wait until they make one for my H3.
35's on 18" are very nice looking and functional. Although must of us ha 37's in Moab last time, 35's went over everythingthe 37's did. 35's IMO woul dbe best with your trailer too. But get the programmer too.

Thanks Tim! I'm working on it as I type. I'm anxious to see how well they work. The 05's have been re-programmed from the factory, and it seems like they just changed the shift points to an even higher RPM. My 03 Hummer had 50k miles on it and second gear was starting to slip. When towing with the H2 over uneven terrain, meaning hills and passes, it spends most of it's time in second gear. It's programmed to shift out of second at around 5000 rpm's (can't remember the exact #(75miles per hour). It pulls the grade, but it's the darn tranny that takes all the abuse. Hopefully a program that makes the torque converter shift harder will help so I don't go thru some of the same problems with this H2 that I did with the last one. I've haven't quite given into the idea of slowing down, yet. Every state but Oregon has a higher speed limit, so it's nice to be able to keep up with everyone on the highway.
Hummer really should put a bigger engine in these things, or at least offer it as an option.
Technically, I should be driving the Excursion all over Creation, but that wouldn't be near as much fun! No one will flip me off in that!

i ment off road performance like rocks and other things. on that note i have 37" toyos and they are slightly bigger than my stock set up. i dont think the toyos are a true37" tall. i didnt notice a difference but im gettin a super charger anyways!

Could someone please help me out again?
I called the tire shop today and asked about the backspacing on these rims.
The 18x9 has a -4.5 inch backspace and a 4.5 inch front. So that means 0 offset, right?
He also said they'll stick out about an inch and he didn't know if they would rub.
Does anyone know how well they'll work?
