Default Transmission taking long to change up.

Ive noticed for a while now that from 2nd gear to 3rd seems to hold on far too long before it changes. Anyway on the freeway yesterday whilst driving along "Transmission hot" came up on the dic. A quick glance at the gauge and the temp was heading past 200. I pulled in at the nearest service stop and could tell it was running hot. I could smell the type of smell when someone slips the clutch on a manual car. I let it cool for a while. And the attempted the freeway again. It wasn't long before i figured what the problem was. With the Truck at 60mph it was spinning at 2200rpm and the temp rising again. It was stuck in 3rd. Letting my foot off and on the gas pedal or shifting from D to N and back to D again shifted it into top and resulted in the temp coming down. Does this sound like a blocked tranny filter. Or could i be looking at worse. Just to let you guys know. I dont tow with it. And i doubt if any of the previous owners have towed trailers with it.

blocked filter from my experience has always been noticable right at idle... like your at a light w/ the brakes on and it feels like it rolls into neutral.

W/ these newer computer controlled trannies...I dont know how much old school mechanical transfers over to them. The computer is controlling the shift points.

If you come to the conclusion its ****, i'd seriously look at a 4l80 (truck) tranny to put back in. There are a handful of conversion kits commercially available to do this swap. The 4l60 in there now is a car/light duty truck tranny. Basically a 700r4 from the 80's.

If it was a computer problem, would it show on the dic as "transmission fault"? If i plugged a tuner in would it list a code?

Hate to say it, but each time my trans was on its way out thats exactly what it did. The bits of the clutchs break off and clog the ports...causing the issue.

Hopfully im wrong in your case, otherwise I hope you have warantee or about $5000 handy.

No. All i have is a hand written receipt and the word from the dealer i bought it off.One other thing.I can influence the change up from second to third by use of the accelerator.
