Cooling issues...
Okay, where to start....
When I put the supercharger on (Maggie) I installed a two core aluminum radiator. I installed twin electric fans (4600 cfm) but they did not come with a shroud. I thought I was ordering the set and they had shrouds but apparently not.
The recommended place to put an intercooler is immediately behind the grille.
Instead I bought a larger intercooler and mounted it in front of the condensor. (thus making me mount the oil cooler between the radiator and engine)
I then put the transmission cooler where the intercooler should go.
Anyway, the truck runs a hair over 210 (still have the 190-195 thermostat in it, when I put the 160, it overheats)
Today was in the high 90's and the truck ran into the 240-250 range in stop and go traffic.
I guess my question is, Summit racing sells a dual fan (6000 cfm) setup with shrouds.
Do you think shrouds make that much difference?
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Cooling issues...
I take it that thermostat didn't work right?

Re: Cooling issues...
When I did my small block conversion in my Jeep, initially I had no shroud and engine temp would peak at about 250. Once I installed the shroud it only peaked at 215. That is using A fan clutch, no electric fans.

Re: Cooling issues...
Yes, you need the shroud. It will make a huge difference.

Re: Cooling issues...
I never had a problem with that, but Fubar did. He went through all kinds of crap.
I don't know if it was ever corrected.
Get the one with the shrouds and be sure to install a cutoff switch in the cabin. This way you can turn it off when you charge through a deep water hole. I shredded a pair of fans deep on the trails doing that. We went back to the original fan clutch after that.
Good luck.

Re: Cooling issues...
Mark,
I just bought that other set of dual fans that you didn't like the shroud on. I got them for a REALLY good price of course. Why don't you try them out when I get them and see if they help. Ifo so you take them, if not I'll put them on the back hatch of mine like a jet car.

Re: Cooling issues...
Tim,
I'm sitting on my couch right now double checking dimensions. I just went out to the truck to measure the the size of of the radiator.
I'm getting ready to order this.
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=FLX%2D284&N=700+4 00226+115&autoview=sku
Didn't we measure the width to be 32"? If so, this will make a tight fit.
I'm going to have to spend almost 600 bucks on these fans and then I want to get a new transmission cooler with a fan and mount it under the truck.
The ones you just bought I don't seeing as being very helpful. They're more cfm but still without a shroud and I honestly think that's my biggest problem.

Re: Cooling issues...
Mark,
I think it was just over 31. Well you are more than welcome to try the new ones out first if you don't buy others before hand. **** for the price they cost you could have a custom shroud made and still probably half the others price. Just a thought.

Shrouds are needed for sure. It is strange the cooler stat did not help so i would ask for a trade and still go with 160 stat. You can of course test it in a pan of water on the stove but, that would not mean it will not malfunction the next time.
The best fan setup yet is getting the electric fan setup of the GM HD pickup trucks. They even match the place to hang on crossbar but, you just have to drill holes in shroud on top to match factory holes. They will also allow you with a tune tap into rigs computer to turn the fans off and on. I have been able to hot lap my H2 during tuning and other tests without the rig heating up in any runs.
Shroud is needed though. Good luck!! You may be able to use fans you have and just buy the HD shroud to mount over fans you have. The HD shrouds actualy hold the motors etc. but, You may find a shroud that will still mount in the same way and maybe probem solved. Worth a look anyway.

Re: Cooling issues...
thanks guys, before I order the electric fans with shrouds, I threw the clutch fan back on. I realize there is a HP loss and I still don't have a shroud but hopefully it'll help... we'll see.
I'll let ya'll know when I get stuck in traffic.
