Default compass on mirror hanging on west direction

on my 2006 H3 the compass on the rear view mirror hangs on the west direction. I can turn it off the compass/temp, kill the engine, remove the key, then start it up and it will show the correct direction until it hits W again, then it will stay on W. Anybody had this happen. I didn't think I looked at the direction that much but I guess I do.

try re-calibrating and see if that works. I cna;t remember how to do that, but it is in the manual. might solve it before heading to the dealer.

To recalibrate the compass you need to turn in a tight circle four or five times. My compass was not right when I first got my truck, and this is what we did at the dealership to fix it.

I thought that's what you do before you sign the papers to buy the truck.

That is a hellva idea, that never crossed my mind. I'll give it a shot.
I was starting to think all my road trips from Texas heading west must wore a groove in my compass. thanks
