Default Well, they say it happens in 3....

Last week when I decided to rotate the tires, I came across a few problems...

First, the damn stud broke...

While looking at the stud, I noticed the shock seemed like it was at a wierd angle...WTF?

Then out of the blue, I've got a serious vibration at 45 mph. I pulled the driveshaft (my newly made aluminum one) and the guy at the driveshaft shop said it had a bend in it. He says the way the bend is in it that it's from torque.

I assured him that there wasn't enough torque to bend a driveshaft that they use in 700HP vehicles.

Anyway, they're making a new one, I'm going back to steel instead of aluminum...

Hopefully this was the last of my set of 3.

My first thought was that these were all related but I haven't been offroad in a LONG time, didn't drive over any hybrids.... really I have no understanding or rational explanation why these 3 happened at the same time.

Mark

Maybe the broken shock was absorbing the driveshaft bend as transfered to the broken stud.

Mark, do you lift?

Apparently you are too strong. You broke the wheel stud just after applying so much torque to the lug wrench that it was twisting up the rear end bending the shock ram and bending up the drive shaft.

Take a good look at your panhard bar and your trailing arms. The wheel stud could be a coinkydink (although I'm not a huge fan of those) but the shaft and shock ram sounds related.

Sounds as though the rear end might have got out of alignment

Crush I agree with PARAGON. I would look at alingment. I would be looking at the bushings real close. If You do not put something on them so You can really twist the arm to see movement it can look good and not be close to half good. But it looks like something is allowing the axle to move forward or back somehow. But, it could be a page out of Murphy's Law. I hope it is simple fix good luck.

Taz,

I've been thinking about what you and Paragon said. I have taken a look at the panyard arm, trailing arms and bushings. From what I can physically see, everything seems normal. I think however an alignment will tell me more. (though Murphy's Law is more my luck...lol)

That's the problem right there, it's the opposite on wheel lugs so you turn in the direction of tire rotation.
