This is my second yellow top, the first was replaced under warranty as it failed after 3 months. Previously I had a red top which failed after 12 months.

You mentinoed that before. Isn't that abnormal? Even under heavy use, shouldn't a good battery last a few years?

I had a Yellow Top go bad pretty quick, it was within the warranty period and was replaced under the warranty.
Mine is a Yellow 34/78 and it will have a brother in there with him next week. I made a dual battery holder that will hold two Yellow tops and am controlling them with a Hellroaring BIC-95300B isolator/combiner.

Re: optima battery
When using a yellowtop, does it require any additional adapters or is it just a straight swap? My oem battery just died again today...4th time since I bought it....

My yellow tops were starting to get weak again, so we just swapped in this bad boy (SP2150A) yersterday. Fits like a champ and has almost as much reserve power as 3 yellow tops. This is their new (allegedly) super industrial design so we'll see how it holds up.

Kodiakz: Keep us posted on this. Few things are as important as a good battery.
I usually buy the biggest Sears DieHard that will fit in my battery bracket, put it in there, and I'm strong for about 4+ years. Not very sophisticated, but it's worked for me for over 20 years.

doc, if you get the right ones they have GM side posts and the fit in the tray just fine. The D34/78 yellow top also has top posts with are nice for jumping and for hooking up accessories without having to use GM accessory posts.
See here for specs.

I wonder if you had constant draw from your stereo and it was killing your batts. I know a guy that can wire it the proper way for you.

Re: optima battery
Ahahahha! YOu so funny!
No, no current draw, just a dead cell in one of the yellow tops that continually drains the other 2 batteries. I am considering having the alt wound up to 200 amps to keep up with the aduio system.
