Hey y'all,
i live here on the island of kauai, hawaii and also a proud owner of a 2006 Hummer H2. i just came back from a 1 year deployment to baghdad, iraq with the HI Army National Guard. Came home 2 months ago and bought the H2 cash on site, $55K. My question is do we really need to rustproof and do the under coating for the H2? I know HI is known for salt air and all the bad elements of nature. I would appreciate all the advise from you guys. ALOHA...

Thanks for your service.
You can do it yourself. Buy the undercoating in a can, or two or three, from your local autoparts store and rattle can it. Just be sure you check it every month or so. For touchups, just sand off the rust and respray.
BTW, all H2's get surface rust. You just need to keep it from becoming a virus.
Some people have done Zeibart.

Congrats on the 06 as I just bought my first one too! Thanks for service to are country and glad to see your home safe. I had mine undercoated at Ziebart. In Michigan we have road salt in the winters, so it's kinda like your problem with it in the air.

(RETIRED D.S.) Man you guys are going through hell!
I am going to tell you something strange: check with Mercedes Benz they have a underbody sealant product that is a wax type coating (I have personally used it) that is clear and stays on real well. The surface must be clean and properly prepared. You know how Germany can be with all the salt, so they got to have good products.

Screw all that. It's the underside of your truck and any kind of paint is going to scrape off.
I use something called Fluid Film on all kinds of stuff. You can spray it on bare metal and it bonds with the metal to keep it from rusting. It was developed for use on Nuclear subs to the Space Shuttles and is also a great lubricant.

I use this stuff after every off road trip.
Quick for touch ups and large areas.

Still gonna get scratched off, might as well use the cheap stuff to start with It does look pretty good though, what color is it? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>It's sort of an oily film. It doesn't get scratched or washed off. It bonds with the metal and you just spray it back on every 6 months or so. It's stuff that's used on oil rigs for their winch cables.
We spray it on all of the farm equipment. You can get a five gallon that comes thick as molasses but you can thin it out with motor oil or something and use a paint sprayer and it will coat everything.

kauaiboy, excellent thought about the rust proof coating. I'd say that you should also try to wax your chrome parts every other week. It keeps them looking really nice, and helps prevent some surface cloudiness.
I'll have to try the Fuild Film stuff. Sounds pretty nice. As long as it's not too expensive. Also, it says it will not harm paint, and it's non-toxic, which is always nice. Sadly, it's not biodegradable.

Thanks for your brave service kauaiboy!
Bottom line: What's the best way, if any, to simulate what should have been done from the factory? I.e., what would make it not rust like Phil's F-150 mentioned in the Gen. H-1 Disc.?
Is it Ziebart?
What I'm getting at is that, Phil, it sounds like the the F-150 you had was not getting its under body protection knocked off by off-roading? Would the Ziebart stuff have been just as effective on your f-150?
Can I raise my H2 in a bubble?
