PUTTING SPARE ON TOP OF RACK AND HOLE IN DOOR ?
Is there any way to take of the spare tire holder on the back door and not leave a hole or looking like somethings missing on the back door when you take it off when putting the spare on top. if so post a photo if you did. Thanks

Re: PUTTING SPARE ON TOP OF RACK AND HOLE IN DOOR ?
The spare tire mount comes right off but leaves 4 threaded holes exposed. I got 4 stainless steel allen bolts with rubber washers to fill the holes. You can have a body man fill and paint over them but your kinda screwed if you ever want to use the mount again. So I figured just putting some nice bolts in would do the trick for me.

What do you do when you have a flat tire?

Re: PUTTING SPARE ON TOP OF RACK AND HOLE IN DOOR ?
Havent had a flat yet,, probably get one now now that Im thinkin about it On trips out of town the spare goes up top on the rack, but in town Im never to far away from my garage,,, sooo I just hope for the best, It will probably bite me down the road, but Im not to worried about it. Hey Crash it only takes 10 minutes to take the hanger piece off the back and you can judge for yourself how you like the look. Really changes the look in back . If your drivin alot of miles away from your garage it might not be a very good idea, but a show and shine show or a day at the park detailing your H3,, the little bit of wrenchin might be worth it for something different. See ya

Re: PUTTING SPARE ON TOP OF RACK AND HOLE IN DOOR ?
I love the look of the rear without the tire.
I have been thinking if and how you could use the tire mounts for a ladder. Do you all think it could hold the additional weight of a 200lb guy and a 100lb wheel?
I am close to buying now after a year of waiting but now waiting for order dates and changes in 2008. Nothing from my dealer wouldn't budge with anything for the new year.

Re: PUTTING SPARE ON TOP OF RACK AND HOLE IN DOOR ?
Yup its alittle tough slinging the spare up there, I have that rear bumper guard that really gives me a base to stand on which makes it alot easier . Its really no problem, Ive done it enough times. Shyanne,,, the door flies open now. Its kinda fun . I like to open it when someones around. They jump back because it wings open and at the last sec. the damper slows it down. Cheap thrill when alot of gawkers start showing up around our stock car garage wanting a cold and gold. I say sure right over here and lead them up to just short of the door and let her fly !!

Re: PUTTING SPARE ON TOP OF RACK AND HOLE IN DOOR ?
I've got a rack up top I'd keep the tire on if I pull it off the back door.. I tossed an unmounted 35" BFG MT up there when I was hauling them all to the shop to be put on.. Not to sure I'd wanna toss a tire up there to many times in a row.. Of course in the past ten years I haven't....
Ummm No.. I'm not gonna even say it.. It'll happen on the way home today if I do...

Easy part is getting the tire off roof. Just roll off
Hard part is getting it back up. But then you just throw it in the back.

I see it now.. Toss tire off roof.. Tire goes rolling down the road and across 8 lanes of traffic taking out two 18-wheelers, 4 mini-vans and 32 members of "The Killers" Vespa club..

Re: PUTTING SPARE ON TOP OF RACK AND HOLE IN DOOR ?
So my question still stands, Does anyone know how much weight the spare tire mount holds? If I knew it could handle the weight of myself and a spare, I would use it as a ladder mount!

I'm at work right now and can't post pics, but I'll take a pic of my roof rack w/spare tire tonight when I get home from work. Chances are I'll get home and immediately start drinking and forget, so PM if you don't see a pic by tomorrow.

There are plenty of back-n-forth discussions on exactly what the weight carrying capacity is on the rear door and the tire mount. You will find some (like me) who take a more conservative approach and prefer little weight that is suspended off the door, and others who are more comfortable with putting weight both directly up against the door as well as on racks (mounted to the door using the existing holes).
I've personally had the spare, one mtn bike (maybe 26-28 lbs) on the door and still used the tire as a single step up to the roof rack (I weight ~200#). I'd probably be ok with this if it wasn't a regular thing and i don't stand on it - it's just temporary. I'd probably recommend against mounting a ladder AND the spare to the back to the door and then using it - on a ladder you will likely climb up, putting more weight for longer on the door, causing more deflection. Again, that's my opinion and you will find 10 people with 10 opinions on this topic, none of us with any scientific data one way or the other

Re: PUTTING SPARE ON TOP OF RACK AND HOLE IN DOOR ?
Two thoughts -
1) Shaped plastic (perhaps plexiglass) painted black over the mount and holes. Finish mounting it with cap screws and covers. Add a decal or other design
2) Build a mount that incorporates a fold down/out step similar to those for side steps. Use it to access roof "stuff"
