Air Filter replacement schedule?
How often are you guys changing out the air filter? I just replaced mine at 34K and it was almost completely clogged. I can't remember if I had it replaced before.
The manual says:
" Inspect engine air cleaner filter if you are driving in dusty conditions.Replace filter if necessary."
How do you "inspect" one of these filters? You can't see the dust/dirt since it resides inside of the filter.

Re: Air Filter replacement schedule?
Check it after each summer. Since you live in a place where there's lots of dust during the summer, and you off road a lot, you'll probably need one more often than the average owner.
Supposedly, you can use the little valve on the intake tube to check and see if the filter is operating correctly, but I've never seen mine work.
Take it out and shake it or tap it on the ground, if a bunch of dust falls out and you can't get it to stop, then it's probably time for a new one. I've seen mine with about 2 cups of dirt fall out of it. There will always be some dust in them, but too much is bad. I wouldn't recommend using an airhose to clean it out either. Air filters donot respond well to blowing them out, and it usually doesn't help for very long.
You can always replace it with an aftermarket filter that you can clean and reuse. I don't think they come in Yellow though.

I'm at 37K and I've replaced mine 4 times. Maybe excessive, but I change it every three months whether it needs it or not.

Every 3 months? Wow. Are the H3 filters cheap? $70.00 for an H2.

The dust absolutely poured out of it like it was bowful of sand. I hacked into the old one and each flute was complete caked with dust. Major oops and self- ![1owned](images/smilies/1owned.gif)

Nice.
What I should is hook up with Tim. Each time he buys a new H2 I'll just swamp my filter with his before he returns it.

Re: Air Filter replacement schedule?
I still don't understand how you "check" the filter.
Sure, it's obvious that if a pile of sand/dust comes you you need to change it. Is that the "check"?

when your little valve is orange or red or whatever color it supposed not to show, it's time to replace or clean

I'm thinking you just said - "Guess if it's full or not".
I wanna freakin' dial, indicator, something to squeeze, taste, feel or audio feedback that gives me a percentage of useful life remaining. ![Rant](images/smilies/rant.gif) .

Re: Air Filter replacement schedule?
OK Co,
Here's the deal. An easy way to check your filter is to take it out of the truck, take the filter out side, hold it up in the sun and look through the opening (the part that secures to your intake). If you can see a good amount of sunlight through the filter its ok.
Also you can do the same thing with a flashlight (this is the way I check mine). Just put the flash light inside the filter and shine the beam on various parts of the filter, exaim the outside of the filter as you do this to see how much light is escaping, the more the better. To see what I am telling you here try comparing your old filter to a new one, that will give you a night and day difference. Even though I think this is blatently obvious I'll say it anyways; when trying the flashlight "technique" make sure to do it indoors, preferably in a slightly dim room but not a dark room.

Thanks Carey! Sounds good.
I still can't believe that some of you guys change the filters every 3 months. I only drive my H2 about 7000 miles a year.
