Damn Rocks
In my most recent off-road trip, I got on a good size rock and bent a trailing arm.
It didn't seem to effect anything but I thought I would replace it with something a bit stronger. All the aftermarket heavy duty ones ranged from $250 to $400. Too much for me.
I purchased a new set of OEM arms and welded a square tube inside. Much cheaper.
Got the driveshaft too. Ooops!
Found a new one on Ebay.

Re: Damn Rocks
OUCH! That first photo was like looking at a broken leg with the bone sticking out...I actually winced. LOL!
Good DIY solution!

Re: Damn Rocks
Damn... what Guruerror said!
Nice solution on the OEM beef up. You should paint those and sell a few on Ebay to make your money back!

Re: Damn Rocks
I've heard of those trailing arms giving out once or twice before. I've never had any problems myself, but have actually been thinking about doing that mod to mine, to prevent any issues later on.
I think I was reading a thread on this forum where a guy was going up a steep grade, hopped his rear end and both trailing arms folded from the torque. Could've been another forum though..
Anyway! for a nice, easy mod!

Re: Damn Rocks
Surprisingly, the pics didn't make me wince.
I'd seen some Edelbrock replacement trailing arms for a really good price last year and thought "who the hell would be dumb enough to bend their factory one up?"
Actually, I knew that was another weak link in the deuce, so it comes as no surprise. Looks like you may have been a little too hard on THAT particular Prius!

SMA made a set, occasionally you'll run across them on Ebay.
There was a guy on this forum that was making a set, that he planned on producing and selling on the forum, but no one had much interest at the time. IIRC, it was some heavy duty business with heim joints.
