Yeah they rust - behind the glove compartment, under the dash, underneath the vehicle, on most if not all the bolts. They rust.
This is not a Tahoe or a Escalade. These things rust - get used to it - get over it - get on with it. - If you don't want yours to rust then do a body off frame restoration.

I am told by a machanic friend whom I respect that the rust on the heavy parts underneath is not an issue. They build up a rust layer that absorbs grease after a while and becomes essentially protective. It's intentional, not a shortcut by GM.

It still bothers me.

I agree and understand about the underbody rusting. However, what about all the other parts that are rusting?? Just how long will it take for the rust to do damage to these other parts?? I have never heard of any vehicle being made these days where rust was to be expected. Last car I have had the rusted was a 1984 Pontiac Sunbird...8 cars since then, and no rust. Does GM state this is normal?? What does everyone think??

I just did a thorough after-ski underbody water jet spray on my Hummer, 14.2 months 20K. I am glad to report that I did not see any rust on the underside of the Hummer.

Has anyone here had many problems with rust in other places, as posted earlier?? Is the rust going to limit the h2's life??

Damn Phil.

I never realized your rusted so bad. I'll have to look under mine again, but I haven't noticed any rust like that on mine.

I always assumed that when people were complaining of rust it was just little bits around the bolts or something nit picky like that.

quote:
Besides I don't see other GM vehicles rusting like this. Maybe they save this special rust/grease treatment just for the H2.

Actually I was concerned about this as well. I had rust in my glove box so I checked my wife's Tahoe and it had rust in the same spots. I went to a Caddy dealer opened up a brand new escalade, looked in the glove box and same rust.

The problem with the H2 is it's tall with no front or rear overhang so you can see everything. If you really look at other SUV's you'll see the same thing but you need to crawl under to see it.

I now have an H1 and one of the first things I checked was for rust, but there is none to be found on the bottom (yet). I don't buy that GM wants it to rust so grease can get absorbed but sounds like a creative out by one of the techs. They told me it was just surface rust. Today in 2003 cars should absolutely not rust at all, but I also believe paint should be scratch proof.

Can't you just spray bomb the areas black?
They have a high heat enamel paint that I used after some light sanding(mabye a light sandblast would be better). Still looks good.

I can't tell the rust from all of the Sedona Arizona Red Rock Dirt, that is under the rig, I wash and wash and there still lots of dirt under the rig. I think I spent to much time off road

SOunds like I ought to insist on the Ziebart (or equivalent) rust protection before I take delivery. At least we do get a 6 year 100,000 miles rust through warranty! Right?

Maybe I'll just take it off-roading through the La Brea Tar Pits once a year and hope I don't wind up fossilized!
