big h3, small garage door
Hey everyone, Im looking to buy a small townhouse (Im a first time home owner I think I have found a great place Good price, great location, good quality) Anyways the townhouses come with a 2 car garage. The garage only has one garage door and it is two cars deep not 2 cars wide. The garage door seems really small, I measured the garage opening and it came out to 88 inches wide and 85 inches tall. I looked at the stats on the h3 on the hummer.com website and it said its 85.5 inches wide, and 74.5 inches tall. So I mean I know im good for height but Im not sure if I will be able to get into the garage with only 2.5 inches to spare And even if I do make it in i wont be able to pull the h3 to the back of the garage to enjoy the larger section of the garage, because backing it out will be a bitch. Does anyone have any similar situations? does anyone have any ideas that might make getting in and out of the garage easier? Im for sure getting both so they better work well togeather. thanks for the help in advance

The entrance will widen over time as you run into it. I know people that their mirrors clear each side by about 1" and it's fine, you get used to it. Your only other options would be to find a different house or widen the garage entrance.

Re: big h3, small garage door
lol yea, The mirrors are the widest part of the truck I honestly dont care to much if they hit, we had an h1 and my dad hit the mirror on the garage once. He got all upset it was kinda funny cause it was such a small nick in the mirror and it was just black plastic. I think the curb feelers might be a good idea I might try and get something that will be like a rail system, might work?

Re: big h3, small garage door
It's easy. I have to pull into a security gate to get at the key code every day. The only way to reach the keys is to get snugged up close and just clear the mirrors over the concrete filled steel posts that protect he gate key pad. I just clear it, every time. A 1/4" is as good as a mile. Don't pay attention to the other side, just make your driver's mirror barely clear the door, rest assured the other side will. My buddy's behind me say "Damn you almost always hit the posts!" I say "Dayum, I missed 'em!"
Side note, the mirrors won't always give and fold the way they're supposed to. If they get a side pressure on them instead of a straight hit, it crushes them instead of folds them. Mega buck repair for such a fast mistake. (I've got the t-shirt)

I agree but the hard part wont be getting in the garage, it will be getting out. I will have to pull all the way to the back of the garage to be able to open the doors... Well it should be interesting to bad that link was a "joke" I need ideas. or else I might get a heeper with my gf she might get a unlimited wrangler... its not bad and skinny BUT its no h3.

Yeah, get some aloe vera for that chafed mangina.
I had a 3/4 ton Suburban that I used to back into a garage. I had about 2 inches of clearance on both sides and all it took was practice to get comfortable with lining it up correctly.

Re: big h3, small garage door
I found the original dementions of the garage... it will be a peice of cake!! the actual width of the garage is 93 inches, not 88! An additional 5 inches will make it much easier, Maybe I will get the back up cam just to make life easy, I figure I will do like drtyfn and back into the garage so getting out is the easy part.
and Im alergic to aloe vera, had a bad mishap with it years ago, lol jk

Re: big h3, small garage door
It does get easier with practice. I had a smallish garage once, very tight for my truck, I hung a tennis ball from the rafter. When I bumped that sucker, I was 1" from the workbench. The door cleared by 1/4"!
Another option for your clearance ills is to roll down your window, grab your mirror and fold it in. That'll give you some more room.
You COULD put in a new garage door and make the opening larger too. Hey, it's only money.
