I did an expose' on women that would self-injure. It's an attempt to alter their mood because they never learned to cope with some aspect/s of life in an acceptable manner.
Some research has shown around 50% of self-injurers were sexually abused.
It should be noted that if the self inflicted injuries are readily visible, it's usually done to get attention.
