Default Sider hood latches--can I do without for a few days?

of normal driving? I am stripping the truck to take all the "bling" to the powder coater... he needs parts for about a week.

Can I rely on just the hood latch??

those latched stabilize your hood, keep it even on both sides. I would not drive it without them. Someone has to have a spare set you can borrow.

If not, Ebay always has them for cheap.

Thanks for reply!

Well.. if anyone has a set that they want to let me borrow that would be cool.

Maybe I'll put a bungee cord across the entire hood...

Sorry but with dual latches across the top of the hood, you'll be just fine without the latches on both sides for a few days.

The straps are only there to keep it from the edge of the hood smacking up against the front body panel (fender)

There are still rubber stoppers so it's really not a big deal. They sure as hell ain't holding the hood down.

Well thanks... I've been driving it 60 and under just in case, but both me and the powder coater couldn't see how that thing would pop open..... after we sat and tugged on it.

Even if it did pop open, the hood opens the wrong way to create any kind of problem.

I think Tim was just talking about moving side to side.. (ie. rubbing)

Ah, there could be a problem if it comes un-latched Mark, quick stops and the hood will go forward...... I know this.

Was working on the truck, took it for a test drive and forgot to let the hood latch, it was just "layin there" and when I went to stop I seen the hood going forward, let off the brakes and rolled to a stop and then latched everything up while I finished my "repair work test drive"

That's just the point.... you had it "layin' there". If you close it so it latches, IT WILL NOT OPEN!! I don't care how hard you hit the brakes.

The rubber straps on the sides are exactly what Tim said they are for, to keep the sideways movement to a minimum.... providing you close the latch completely, there is no reason for the hood latch to become undone unless you pull the hood release cable.

TOUCHE!!!

I should have clarified... but regardless, you're right, if not latched, I guess it could pop forward if you hit the brakes hard enough.

Mark,

I got in a hurry that day after working under the hood. I had laid the hood down but not latched so I could back out of the garage and also left the truck running with the plans of opening the hood back up and look for any problems after I went into the house to wash up and get a bottle of water before the test drive.

Note: I have a tee shirt that says "Easily Distracted" and it is true, I am.

I finished up in the house, got in the truck and drove off and as I slowed from 35 mph at the first stop sign I seen the hood raise up about 3" to 5", the pucker factor set in. There wasn't any traffic (we live in the sticks) I rolled through the stop sign and rolled to a stop, got out and closed it all up and kicked myself in the a$$.

I think part of the reason it came up so easy was the OEM brush guard and its location and weight, just a thought.

But anyhow kiddies, learn from uncle Eds mistakes and be sure to latch that hood before driving off

hey can i ask when you took the latches off to be powder coated, how did you separate the straps from the actual metal ? (I bought some oversized pirate billet ones) but can't remove the rubber strap. Im wondering if i use a hammer and knock the pins out, will i be able to get them back in when i reassemble with the new black parts?
