We bought a h3 three weeks ago and racked up a 1000 miles. We have not been off road yet so we feel we have been really easy on the car. Recently I have noticed that when we depress the brake the steering column seems to knock. Is this right?? I have felt this in my 67 camaro but never a new car over 35grand??

When you brake hard with the abs brakes, you will feel a shutter in the steering column. They talk about it in the manual under brakes. I don't know if this is what is happening, but it is a possibility.

Mine does the same thing. It isn't the ABS. If you come to a stop at a light and then let off, then reapply the brakes you can duplicate the knocking/rattling over and over again. This only happens on mine after it has been driven for some time. Next time I have it at the dealer I'm going to have it checked out.

Could be the check valve on the brake booster. There have been cases where these tend to be loud and the sound transmits through the dash panel. Or it could be the brake switch itself.
Let a dealer troubleshoot it.

This is exactly what is happening with my H3. I have it in the dealer right now. I dropped it off this morning! I took the service tech for a ride with me and he claimed he couldn't hear anything.
I am forwarding the text of this entire thread to the tech's email address in hopes it will help them (and let him know that I am not crazy). I will let you know the results.

Well big surprise, they claim the tech couldn't find anything wrong. They said 3 different people drove it including the service manager. In addition the tech checked everything underneath the vehicle. He poked, prodded, pulled, etc. and still nothing. So if ANYONE is able to get a dealer to figure out what the heck these weird knocking noise is please let me know so I can give the dealer here the fix. It only seems to happen at certain times and when it happens you can reproduce the sound by applying the brakes quickly and getting the truck to rock back and forth (front to back).

go to the dealer and have them inspect the tie rod ends, they may be loose, at least mine was but it felt different from what you describe. but it knocked and if you jerked the wheel a quarter turn you could induce the same knocking sound.

I know mine won't do it until it has been driven for awhile. If it is "cold" it won't do it. Hopefully I can pry it away from the wife sometime long enough to take it into the dealer and have it looked at. If anyone gets a dealer to actually find the problem please post it up.

Yup mine is exactly the same way. I don't hear the noise when the vehicle is cold. I spoke with the dealer this morning and I gotta give them credit for trying. They have offered to have a service tech ride with me. So I am going to stop by and grab one of their tech the next time I am out driving the it starts the clanking noise. It was doing it real bad yesterday when I was out running errands.

So now my truck is doing this. Has anyone determined what it is yet?

Dealer has diagnosed mine as needing a new rear differential. In this case they are going to replace the entire rear axle. It is supposedly on its way to the dealer now and should arrive in 5-7 business days. Once it's replaced I will let everyone know if that fixes the problems.
