Re: HELLLPPP....tire pressure monitors
Also, if the rim that was used for the spare is rotated into the four on the ground, you will need to "re-learn" the TPM sensors. The process is in the owner's manual.

Ahhhhh, yes. This has been discussed elsewhere. Apparently, GM stopped putting the TPM sensors in the spare in '08 as a "cost cutting measure".

the real reason was because NOBODY EVER CHECKS THE AIR IN THERE SPARE TIRE !! and if it had a monitor when it was low it would set off the tire light ..
and getting paid under warranty to find the problem and submit it to get paid gm was loosing there ass on this. so they got rid of it .. because they had to pay warranty work that was a crock because the owner was too stupid to check it
and it paid .7 to diag the low tire light and .2 to inflate all tires to specified pressure ... thats .9 total .. and if a shop charger 100.0 per hour thasts 90 bucks to do that .. nd if the tec makes 20 bucks a flat rate hour thats 18 bucks he just made ... now add all the millions of warranty claims up ....
gets expensive real quick ...........

The system doesn't check the spare tire. Only the four on the ground. The only warranty claims would be for people who rotate in the spare and have the dealer reprogram the system. Probably won't lessen those types of warranty claims since you'll still have people rotate in the spare not knowing they don't have a sensor and then wondering why they can't get rid of the SERV TPM light.
The federal law does not mandate the spare be monitored, so its just another one of those nickel and dime things. Like the tray in the center console and some other stuff I can't remember right now.

Re: HELLLPPP....tire pressure monitors
The spares a full size tire and rim, it is meant to be rotated in a normal 5 tire rotation. A dumb question: What does the sensor look like? Is it just part of the valve stem?

Re: HELLLPPP....tire pressure monitors
The TPM looks like a shrimp off the barbie. The TPM sits on the end of the tire valve stem and flares out. Its dimension is roughly 1" by 1 1/4" by 1/4" thick...

Re: HELLLPPP....tire pressure monitors
Thanks wpage. I guess you pull the tire off, then can unscrew the sensor from the valve stem? I'm asking since I'm looking at getting a set of tactical rims and most I've found do not come with the sensors. So I will need to swap my sensor over to these.
Thanks again!

They did until the '08 models and maybe some late '07 too.
I've had my spare on for about 20K miles now. I've had tires damaged (some repairable, some not) and have basically been rotating all 5 tires since. Without the 5th sensor I would have had to either buy another one or swap it to another rim everytime.

So are you just ignoring the warning? Cause I want to rotate my spare in and figure I would ignore it and check the tire pressure just like I always have in the past!

No, I have an early build '06. It came with sensors on all 5 rims. I just relearn the sensors after rotating.

"the spare doesnt get rotated, its your spare and is always your spare."
My dealer said the same to me, sorry but what if you want to change to a different brand and or size after the first set wears...another gov. mandated thing for a few people that are too lazy to check tire pressure for there own safety!

Re: HELLLPPP....tire pressure monitors
I have 2 sets of tires & wheels, and all tires including spares have the TPM sensor. When I purchased the 2nd set of tires few months ago, dealer insisted on 5 TPM sensors to be installed, basically the spare tire TPM being mandatory (for my '07).. I paid like $55 per sensor at the dealer (new ones, ordered from GM).

Re: HELLLPPP....tire pressure monitors
I got a set of tpm's for my extra tires off a chevy equinox. They did not sync with the h3 system even though both 06 gm vehicles.

Re: HELLLPPP....tire pressure monitors
Yea, somewhere mid-year with the 07 models they dropped the sensor in the spare. If your spare has a rubber valve stem then you do not have a sensor.
Also, make sure you use a plastic valve cap and not a metal one. The metal ones bond with the stem and when you try to remove the metal cap it twists off the stem with it and your buying yourself a new sensor. It sucks when that happens!
